WTF! Crackling when playing music

Hi guys,

Sold my main PC a few months ago to pay for other things and I recently sorted myself out a temporary rig to tide me over until I can afford a new system later this year.

Specs are...

Pentium 3 1GHz CPU
256mb PC133
Unknown motherboard
40gb Maxtor HDD
64mb GF4 MX440 AGP Graphics Card
SoundBlaster Live 5.1

It's running Windows XP SP2.

Now, I would have thought this machine would have been quite able to perform simple tasks such as play MP3 files in Winamp 5 and surf the Internet using Firefox.

Whenever I navigate to another page... or even open My Computer for example, the CPU usage shoots up to 100% (as I'd expect) and the audio output starts crackling.

If Winamp is paused, it's fine and doesn't do it.

Now my old machine (OC'd Mobile 2500, 1gb RAM, 200gb HDD, Abit NF7-S, Audigy Platinum) never did it, even when I was playing Half Life or Far Cry and listening to music. Neither did the machine I was using between that one and this (K6-2 500, 128mb RAM, SB128, Windows 2000).

What gives? It's so annoying

Cheers for the replies guys.

I've tried 3 different driver versions. All had exactly the same effect.

Also, I'm using the same IDE cables I was from my old machine. No problems with them. :)
