Bought a used bike as a project, did the V5 form, etc. Got a letter today saying this:

"You are the registered keeper of vehicle xxxxx. Our records show that on 17/05/2025 this vehicle was not taxed. This is an offence.

You must now pay an out of court settlement of £52 by 03/06/2025 xxxxxxxxxx do one of the following:

option A

option B"

etc etc. My confusion is in red. It states neither "or" or "and" and can be taken both ways. I'll sorn it this evening, but do I need to pay the fine?

I'm so confused.

i read it as , you HAVE to pay £52 before that date
doesn't matter if you tax it or sorn it, you still need to pay the fine

Ok so rummaging through the post, I found the original, sent on April 26th. Literally the only letter I've missed in the last 20+ years had to be this one :p

I'll see what other feedback I get before paying. It's SORNed now at least.

You need to pay the fine, or if you feel you have reasonable grounds to do so, appeal.

I don't think not opening the letter containing the new V5C would be a valid appeal though.

Yes you'll need to pay it. I was always under the (wrong) assumption that as long as you weren't using the vehicle on the road then you didn't need to sorn it, annoyingly I found out the same way when they sent me a letter a couple of weeks later with a fine because the tax had expired and it wasn't sorn'd despite being stuck on my driveway and hadn't moved in a while.

yep i nearly got caught on that with fil old focus we bought it from the estate at scrap value and put it in our garage. got the letter a few weeks after and managed to wangle it as sorry forgot to sorn due to bereavment and they accepted it and dropped the charge.
but they did point out that i should have sorn it online at time of applying for document ahem .......

I used to think the local enforcement didn't give a rats ass.

Then one day they're outside my house with a couple of flat beds yoinking cars off the street...

I'm very confused - bought the bike in April, I'm assuming the letter being sent off you refer to is the tax letter (do it online next time!)

So how come the date of the untaxed offense is 15th May? Am I missing something where your letter didn't reach the DVLA or something?

I thought that was true - if it's on your drive they shouldn't be photographing it and sending fines surely? And you can contest it?
