Just went on the o2 website to price up a phone, and to my horror, there isn't a 12 month contract option anymore!! it's just 18 and 24!

since when?

Am I delusional or have they actually removed the 12m contracts??

yes pain in the neck hey!

I just called up and asked to quit, in the end i settled for

600 mins
1000 text
unlimited data/web
SE C902 phone
free Broadband with 12 months (router and av software)
£35 a month with £10 off for redemption

so total £25 - quite pleased as i was paying £18 p/m for broadband

shame it's 18 months though

thats a cracking deal :O. I'm paying £20 for the simplicity £25 with £5 off.
I want what you have :( lol.

I've been pondering moving from Orange to O2. They've got much better coverage for where I spend all my time, but I am reluctant to get into an 18 month contract. On the other hand, I do want an iTouch/iPhone.

Burnsy

yeah o2 only do 18 month contracts now, shame, but i was paying £18 for BB so getting 12 months free BB with o2 was the deal breaker for me, as i don't mind being tied to a contract that i'm not paying for :D

the iphone is sweet mate, it comes out on sep 16th on pay as you go too, but will set you back a bit!

These 18 month minimum contracts are starting to nark me off!!!
Mobile's arnt designed to last that long anymore, new models out every 6 months & no firmware updates for the old ones either!!!

I wish they'd stop giving away free games consoles, TV's, Laptops, Broadband etc etc and just sort out a decent sensible length contracts. if anything they should be giving you a new phone every 6~9 months

I have to bin my contract phone every 6~9 months and buy a PAYG handset to keep me going until contract renewal time!

Deal with it then, find a 12 month contract and settle for a lesser handset.

You forget how expensive the handsets are, and that this results in the need for a longer subsidation period. It is either that, or they charge you £40 a month instead of £30. But then that would nark you off too.

When I was shopping for a new contract/handset I found for me at least that over 18months it would be 30pounds cheaper to buy the phone outright and then take a simplicity contract + I'd have the added benefit that I could cancel/change my contract at any time.

i know i was in the same boat, but the discounts and free bolt on's plus the free BB made it by far a better option, if i had a good working handset it might have been another story.

Great!!! there goes my option to change my phone every 12 months if I decided to stick with O2 when my contract is up in October :(

i think they will all follow suit well the big three anyway. like i said they do in a way make up for it and asking for you PAK code rather than an upgrade gets you a whole lot more!:D

I totally disagree that phones aren't "designed" to last that long - quite the opposit.
There seems to certainly be a hardcore mass of people who must have the latest and greatest but really - do you need it?

I used to be the same.
I've owned a mobile for a very long time (Orange were known as Hutchingson Telecom when I joined them) and being on contracts I've always been entitled to "cheap" upgrades every 12 months.
Once upon a time I did this without fail, every year I'd get something new.

Over the years however I've begun to think - why?
All that money spent and really as each new phone arrives it doesn't offer "amazing" over the previous phones.
I haven't swappen my old K800i for ages.
Sure there are some really nice phones out there but I'm just in no hurry.
Add in the fact that the K800i is still going strong all these years later.

O2 won't be the last to stop 12 month contracts.
They were getting fed up really with people getting cut price handsets every 12 months and then selling them on.
I predict in 6-12 months all of the main telcos will be on 18 month contracts for anything half good.

Hold on..................have they scrapped the free double texts aswell?!?!?!!?

i dunno i got a 1000 in my deal, if text more than that i need to get a life

i agree, i needed a new handset, but your right no much changes in 12 months just depends if you look after it!

and yeah they will all follow suit with the 18month deals if they have not already

Fairy nuff, i can't tottaly disagree with the points made.
I look after my phones reasonably well & they get used a lot!

I think it would be a lot more sensible for the operators/resellers to stop offering mad freebies (360's, PS3's, Wii's etc), get back to 12 month contracts & focus on customer service, the only time you get offered any kind of incentive to stay on for a further contract term is after you've asked for you PAC.

about 10 years ago when i got the number im using now with CPWH/BT cellent, super funky number, decent handset & customer service, every 11th month i'd a line rental discount or other incentive, a new phone & i was happy to stay another 12 months & that lastest for 6 years & thats without me having to lift a finger!

The operators don't offer mad freebies. You need to get your facts right before whinging on the Internet.

Resellers provide mad freebies.
