WTF? Stupid drivers...

I've been wrestling with Windows for the better part of the day. No matter how patient I am, my X700 refuses to play ball.

1. Fresh instal of XP SP2
2. Instal VIA 4in1's (tried 4.56 as recommended by Abit, and the latest 5.10)
-Reboot
3. Instal ATI driver (tried 6.8, 6.9, & 6.10)
-Reboot
-Goes through the hardware settings thingimybob
-slow screen refresh, blank screen, bye-bye icons
-Reboot
4. Stare at this:

5. Scream expletives at monitor
6. Remove ATI drivers
7. Rinse, repeat.

I'm losing the will to live.

1Gb PC3200
Radeon X700

If it's anything like my mates MSI (?) then skip step two and it works rather frustratingly.

had the exact same problem with one of my ati cards, installing drivers screwed it up like that, for me, an rma cured the problem

*edit*

now that i think back on it, not installing chipset drivers solved the problem

Cheers guys, that could well be the fix I'd forgotten, It's been over a year since I've had XP on this system.

Here goes the 3rd fresh instal fingers crossed

Reboot again and it goes back to what's in the first post.


Going to try using an even older driver, but, if I can't get this working today, I'm going to go and buy an nVidia card

I've just awoken from the sleep that was required after a 20hr sesh on kotor2 (and I only stopped because I had to go out and get milk ).

I can safely say, all the messing around was worth it
