Behind you... Naked!
HeHe... Sometimes I just dispair, I really do.

Ok, my sons PC, is based on the EVGA 680 SLI Board. Its a nice board, but the other week it went a bit weird, Im not sure how or why, but it just did. I tried a few thigns and I found a few possiblities but nothign solid on why it was being a bugger on me, but basically I simply could not get Windows to re-install, only linux.

I decided after much messing about that I will just swap the boards over... My AMD 7750 setup for his Intel E6550

I was happy and I stuck with that. Been just fine ever since.

Anyway, a couple of days ago, my Linux tester sudenly started to fail to install Linux on? - I have 2x320GB Seagatae drives on that that I plug in seperately and one has Sabayon 5.5 on and the other has Mint 11 but all of a sudden, the sabayon setup started to go funny... Links would open up in gedit instead of firefox and then compiz would lose its title bar / window borders ( This always happens in Ubuntu / Mint but has NEVER happened in Sabayon in the 3 or 4 years that I have used it ) and so I thought Id give ubuntu another shot yet again, but it failed saying the HD was cronked.
The other HD was atemp install and so I used that and it went on fine, but then that failed too by simply not seeing the boot sector or something?

Now, for a kcik , I treid Widnows and that went on fine and I tried Linux again, and no!

So, I decided to once again swap the boards over again.

Windows went in no messing to his setup when previously it would not, Linux went into my setup when previously it failed...

Now, the same, but mirrored issue has now happened twice on that EVGA 680i Motherboard... One time it was fine with linux but would not go with Windows, and now its the opposite way around and with both times, it said that the HD was at fault.

I could go on about some other thigns too, the PSU I found was not 100% and thats been swapped but now the replacement PCU is also questionable ( but both are fine on other PCs ) and the HDs have been replaced anagain, the new HDs are now iffuy and yet all Hds are f ine in other PCs, so it must be teh Mobo, but the Mobo in itself is so silly in doing this.

And why is it fine for a while but then swaps over?

Ah bugger.

Hi, i have had similair issues before with an EPIA VIA CPU, it wouldnt boot if it was warm :3) It was the motherboard and there was no real rhyme or reason and had to get it RMA'ed.

Is the only thing you havent tried above is different RAM?

Different RAM?

Good call... I have tried different RAM in it, but not as a base to test things...

Its currently got GEIL PC6400 in it and I could try the OCZ Reaper cos thats SLI RAM...

Ok, cheers.. I will have a look...

You do relise that if I can install Linux, then I will be swapping the boards over for a third time now, and that will be your fault! - You do know that dont you?... DONT YOU?

LOL

Nah, I have had it a good while now I have more than had my moneys worth out of it anyway.

But yeah, I am kind of accepting that in a few days time its going to go silly on me again.

Im considering splashing out on another decent 775 mobo. I just bought a cheapie off the MM but thats for another basic PC and I will probably go for another Gigabyte to replace it if I have to.

Yes, I have recently seen a few too!

Been thinking though... I think that if I do buy another 775 board, I might just splash out on a new one.

I feel that with my i7, I will not be sticking to 775 for the LAN PCs and when they go, I will be going the I7/9 route, or quite probably AMD... Cos I still love AMD.
