Yo all,

Just finished putting together my Sandybridge build... I have Windows installed on a Crucial SSD drive.

I have a Samsung 1TB HD103SJ as a secondary/storage drive.

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/productmodel.do?type=94&subtype=98&model_cd=507

As you can see in the screenshot - the drive isn't accessible! It shows up in the BIOS, Device Manager, etc but not My Computer!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I also get a "HD Not Detected" error in the BIOS when booting.

I have a DVD-RW drive, SSD and this HDD running off the same power rail from the PSU. Could the drive be underpowered? Why can't I see it!

Thanks! :)

Start typing 'disk management' in the start menu.
Select 'create and format hard disk partitions'.
Format your disk and assign a drive letter - job done.

knew it would be something absolutely ridiculous like that ... but I figure I'd take the embarrasement of posting here rather than spend the next hour trawling google lol...

OCuK for the win :)

Glad I'm not alone :)

My only defence is that I haven't bought a new HDD in about 4 years :) And even with those I was dual booting so I had a copy of Windows installed on each (and thus never required this procedure!)

Still FAIL though :)

I am not quite certain why Windows leaves it up to the user to initialise new HDDs. You would expect some kind of wizard to pop up, much like if you connected any new hardware.

Oh well. Even I was caught out by this many moons ago! :D

Especially with Windows 7 - user friendly and easy to install and all that!

I mean, I should have known better, but your average poo-muncher won't have a bloody clue and the purple-shirt brigade will charge them £100 to perform 5 mouse clicks!
