Hello,

The last time I tried Ubuntu (last LTS release) it didn't fulfill all my requirements but since the new LTS release came out I thought I'd give it ago, especially being able to install it and uninstall it so easily.

I downloaded (64bit) and installed it from Windows Vista (32bit), restarted my computer and loaded Ubuntu. It completed its installation process and restarted. I selected Ubuntu from the MBR and it had the scrolling, loading bar as expected but then loaded in to a SSH interface. I restarted again and had the same problem. I noticed however that my RAID setup now stated Status: degraded but bootable. I'm guessing it's because it needs to mess with the hdd to get ext3 format.

I thought, it's not working I'll uninstall and try again. I uninstalled but it went strangely quick. One or two seconds in fact. Restarted my computer to see Ubuntu as an option still in MBR. I expected this to be fixed back to the previous state, especially after all the reviews saying its just like uninstalling a windows program. All I have is a ubuntu-backup directory.

Now, Windows Vista shows two drives, instead of my RAIDed one. Drive F: has the Ubuntu installation, clearly because it has around 15GB less space (14GB actually but I selected 15GB on the install menu).

How can I fix this? I don't want to fix the RAID setup using Intel Matrix Storage Console in case it makes matters worse. I'm using RAID 1 (if I remember correctly). The two drives are mirrored. Well, were mirrored before this :p

Thanks.

im affraid I dont know anything about RAID, but ubuntuforums.org might be worth a shot.

I dont trust this wubi, I want my linux and windows drives to remain totally seperate. Seems to me wubi just creates more problems than its worth.

I don't see the point of Wubi to be honest. It's much better to jjust run it from a live CD or do the full monty.

Yeah, as the other guy suggested, the Ubuntu Forums are brilliant and relatively friendly.

I've tried Ubuntu forums but get no replies :(

The Intel tool is rebuilding the array atm. Hopefully I can fix this all once it's done. Uninstall clearly didn't work as it should have.

Are you using software RAID? Becuase ubuntu is known for ignoring software RAID solutions because of driver issues, this was a concious decsion. Windows can use your RAID but once you install ubuntu from within windows this might create problems? if you rant he LiveCD the partitions would look wrong (you see your hard drives instead of one RAID drive).

As far as I know its hardware raid. The status of the raid comes up before the mbr. I think the intel tool has fixed it. Just need to remove ubuntu from the mbr now

It is definately hardware RAID, i'm dubious, hardware RAID is *very* expensive. You sure its not "fakeRAID" search around for that term i think you'll find what you're looking for, fakeRAID cause all sorts of (almost intentional) problems with ubuntu, because they dont want to get muddled up with the useless drivers for them :)

Just installed Hardy Heron via wubi, it makes the whole installation process painless for those used to windows. Think I will be waiting for the new version of linux mint before I install over my current mint hdd.
Also, wubi didn't manage to successfully install the 64bit version of Ubuntu, apparently this is common. 32bit seems fine though.

Ok. The amazing Intel tool managed to rebuild my array without the Ubuntu install. I used EasyBCD to remove Ubuntu.

Now then, seen as I still want to install this to try it out I don't mind manually dual booting. I've seen guides for normal drive setups but would it be any different for RAID setups?

I knew RAID would turn out to be a pain in the arse :p

I missed that post because I assumed it would be suggesting how to fix the problem I'd fixed yesterday, sorry.

Ubuntu forums said the same as you though and pointed me to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto

Way too much work and future problems just to try a new OS. Maybe if I reformat in the future I won't use RAID and can install it then.
