Hi guys.

Having recently taken up playing Bolt Action, I started to make my own scatter terrain for some games. Things like roads made from carpet tiles, cut up and painted, Hedges made from polystyrene and flocking etc. Pretty simple efforts for my first time terrain making.

The thing was, it wasn't immersive enough for me. So I started watching YouTube videos of terrain board makers and decided to follow the techniques they used. As I have been making these boards I have been documenting my progress with pictures and posting on various groups for Bolt Action and terrain making.

The project consists on 4 boards of MDF with underside frame work to limit any warping. Each boards is 4ft x 4ft. This makes the whole playing area, 4ft x 16ft for some epic encounters for 2-8 players. Each board can be played on its own or joined to the next one in the series.

These boards will take players on a journey through the seasons, from D-Day in spring to winter in a Bastogne themed board.

  • Board one is based on Utah beach and is set in spring. With some greens and yellow ground covering and a selection of the first flowers coming through. It has 2 bunkers made from foam board layers to give the poured cement in wooden frames look. The roofs come off to allow players to put in troops. I will be adding a couple of trees to this board soon, these will be half bare and half with leaves/foliage to give the effect of spring trees coming to life. Some of the edge that leads into the next summer board will have some summer flocking and foliage on it.
  • Board 2 is a generic farm land one. It will have a couple of farm buildings off centre and farm animals/machinery dotted around the board for flavour. This board will have trees made for it. The ground cover will be darker greens to give off the sharp contrast of sunlight we get during that time of year. There will be more flowers and bushes. The edge of this board that connects to the Utah beach spring one will have spring colours fading into the summer colours. the far edge that will connect to the next Autumn board will have a few trees losing leaves and plenty of leaves on the ground, along with some browner colours on the ground.
  • Board 3 will be an Autumn themed board, again, like the other two boards, the ground cover will be blended in from previous boards. Trees at the starting edge will have a few green leaf foliage and some starting to be bare, the rest on the board will all be bare-ish, maybe some brown leaves still on. There will be some focus point to this board but I have not yet decided what. Maybe a radio station, or a German out post. Not sure.
  • Board 4 is the Bastogne themed one. Covered in snow but muddy browns on the Autumn edge. All tress covered in snow apart from the previous edge ones. This will have two areas of trees with no mans land in between. Fox holes a plenty. The far edge will be the start of a town for the Allies to capture.

I have 99% completed the first board and have made a start on the second one. Cost wise, I am looking at around £120 for materials and products spent on it so far. I have been doing this for 5 weeks on-off due to having kids to look after and the wife has lost both her Grandparents within a few weeks of each other so it has put things behind.

Anyway, what use is a post like this without pictures.

This is as far as I have got with the second board. It will be long time to complete this one due to the cost of new things I need. I am doing all this on a budget, a tight one at that.

Very nice fella. Proper historical wargaming for once.
Looking forward to the 'expansions'.
You need a river and bridge one too for Paras…. and you must play end to end on big battle day!

I was tempted to do a river for one of the boards, but I dont want to use resin as its ups the over all cost, trying to keep these to a low cost. I might use the same method as the sea (toilet paper x 3 layers with watered down pva and shaped with a brush) then apply a few coast of gloss varnish to give the effect of some depth.
