What are some good solid ww2 strategy games for pc hex based ideally?

I still love playing on Winspww2, its based on the old Steel Panthers game so its very old graphically (original was released in the mid nineties) but similar to open tt this is a freeware version, there is also a post ww2-present version winspmbt. There are a couple of issues with running in fulll screen mode with win 7 (i think there is a fix) but otherwise its a great game.

Would be interested if there are any similar modern turn based games as well to be honest.

I've got Hearts of Iron III and its certainly impressive in scale but I find it actually too big and a bit slow moving.

My biggest problem with HoI III is the fact that as you progress the game runs slower and it makes my computer run slower.

Oh and Semper Fi, £15 for code updates? **** off.

Not Hex based, but you could try Sudden strike(1+2?) and Blitzkreig(anthology) games which are a little old but very good.

I would suggest Hearts of Iron 3 + Semper Fi Expansion. The AI is still a bit messy and some of the game mechanics still need working on but that will come with more expansions and patches.

For a more polished/complete game try Arsenal of Democracy, its hearts of iron 2 + its expansions + a user/mod team/third party expansion and is said to be the best version of hearts of iron 2 out.

You want Hex based?

My my, brings back memories!

What you want is a copy of Norm Koger's 'The Operational Art of War' - Volumes 1 and 2.

Vol1 covers 1939-1955 and I've played hours and hours on it, although not for a while. Other types of game have taken over. Probably still have a good selection of additional scenarios kicking around somewhere.

Not sure where/whether you can still buy it though - this looks like the only option available:

Is Arsenal of Democracy the whole HOI2? I didn't realise I thought it was just a reworked HOI2

The Operational Art of War 3 is a cracking game, still looks like something from 1998 but the game mechanics have been improved and like the older titles like Harpoon its still being developed and updated by Matrix.
