I love to play stratergy games like Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander etc but was just wondering if there is any games out there that let you play on the WWII stage.

What I would like is a game that lets you play any of the nations involved be they Allies or Axis. And to be able to replay famous battles that happened in the war, but allow you to try and complete them and not have the outcome as it might have been in real life. I hope you understand what I mean, so for instance at the Battle of Midway you play the Japs and are given all the ships & planes etc and then you have to destroy the Americans with your own tactics etc.

COH isn't open ended, I'd suggest something like the Combat Mission anthology (unfortunately the naval and air elements are limited to radioing in support only).

Codename: Panzers Part 1

Get to experience lots of classic battles from the German, American and British perspective.

It's not basebuilding though, it's a points system. You're assigned X amount of points for a mission, and before you start you spend them on your army. An infantry squad might be 50 points for example, and to equip them with a flamethrower might be another 10. It's worth a shot although the learning curve is steep.
