As mentioned in another thread, theres a free two month wwiiol trial starting tomorrow. Youll be glad to know that *apparently*no billing info is required, which surprised even me, as theyll be tons of towing accounts created im sure. This game isnt for everyone as theres a definite learning curve but its worth a shot if youre interested in wwii or into simulations or just want to see what happens when infantry, tanks and planes get into the same space.

40Commando, my old in-game squad, is willing to email a gift voucher to anyone who needs one. Any premium subscriber can send these out as well, so either email me and i'll get one sent to you (trust button at bottom of post) or contact someone with an active sub.

Just some advice - its worth squadding up so you can make the most of your two weeks, a joystick is a must if youre planning to fly planes or drive tanks and dont expect the infantry game to be anything but basic. Its great fun but if youre expecting COD5 youre going to be disappointed.

*Please Note: besides your email address CRS require your real name. I would make something up on your behalf, but if after 2 months of working your way up the ranks and getting access to the high level weaponry (cannon armed spitfires, sniper rifles etc) you suddenly lose your account because you have no credit cards in the name of Mick Mouse, you wouldnt thank me.*

From the official blurb:

CLICK HERE TO SEND YOUR FRIENDS AN E-GIFT CARD!

wth is WWIIOL?

Well, nows your chance to find out! basically, wwiiol is a world war two simulation online. You can fly a plane, drive a tank, sail a ship or run around as an infantry player across a map of Europe using historically accurate (frighteningly so) equipment.

In order to concentrate the battles, the high command essentially selects the three places where its going to attack next and the opposing force has an equivalent three places and the battles rage. That is a horrendous over-simplification of what is an enormously complex system of unit allocation and manoeuvering, but for the purpose of new players you go where the attack or defend orders are. It works to concentrate the fighting into one area, a complaint of the previous ‘anywhere, anytime’ system was you often had to guess where the action was. This meant you often spawned at a city with just you in it which was stupid. Now a series of (destroyable) forward bases provides the point at which you begin your attack, essentially funnelling all the resources from the town behind you to attack the one in front. Infantry spawn from mobile spawn points, lorries set up close to a town (and in the bigger cities, in them) which you can also resupply in. Those are the basics of the game.

A typical battle will see an initial infantry / armor attack and defenders using infantry / anti-tank guns / armor whilst fighters slug it out for air supremacy. Once that has been established (and often when not) the bombers will turn up, and avoiding the anti-aircraft guns that start spawning by the dozen, will try to bomb the crap out of anything on the ground. A war of attrition starts and depending on a host of factors one side shall prevail. Often it depends on the resources that the attacker is willing to throw at it and if sufficient , there’s only infantry cowering in their barracks whilst the last of the flags are captured. But alternative to these battles theres lots to do, such as attacking forward bases, setting up anti tank ambushes or if you’re a flyer as I was, defending factories or doing long range incursions to try and bounce unsuspecting enemy aircraft.

However, before you start you should face a couple of home truths.

Firstly, because the draw distance is literally ‘as far as you can see’, the graphics are basic. You wont be blown away but they are functional and do the job.

Secondly if you’re playing as infantry you come up against the fact that the game is designed to run on a 56k modem… with all that entails for the infantry game. Expect lag, warping and weirdness. You also don’t have the luxuries of the modern FPS, such as a kill cam. Often you’ll be flying, driving or running and then your screen will go black – you’ll switch to an external view where what’s left of your earthly remains will spin for a bit and that’s all you’ll ever know about how you died. You can found out who killed you (and who you killed) from an external stats site, but really youll never know. Many people find that frustrating.

Thirdly you’re playing against grognards. Especially in tanks or planes you’ll often come up against people using tactics straight our of world war two. In the air especially, acm is king. You wont know the plane youre closing in on will execute a barrel roll, let you overshoot and put rounds into where he knows your fuel tank is, youll just blow up. Again, incredibly frustrating to the new player. Tank combat is rarely close range either, if you can see more than the speck of their turret in the distance then youre in real trouble and are about to die.

Those are the main issues. On the very definite plus side, its one hell of a game, theres nothing like it out there. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to drop into an enemy bomber formation (incredibly frustrating, often deadly) or take part in a tank and infantry assault on a town then this is your game. As a noob you wont have access to the top tier equipment but if you JOIN A SQUAD you’ll get a real flavour of the game and youll have a mature friendly playerbase helping you out. And hey, its free so why not try.

Hmmm after all that seems crs have put in a couple of hoops involving real names and a 10 minute request timer. I'll see if there's a way around it and let ya know.

cheers, I will email the others requesting they do the same, youll probably get a duplicate email, just ignore it. any other requests please email me real names as well.

righteo the game is downloading,

For those that get confused at what to download:

ftp://downloads.wwiionline.com/

D/l the 4th one down 'playgate_119.exe' then it autoupdates the game.

How critial is it that i use a joystick? When i played BF2 i was loads better with keyboard/mouse for flying (I understand it will be different).

edit: omg 4gb.... lol

cheers Briton - whats your in-game name mate?

Andr3w there is one flier that is rumored not to have a joystick and still maintain a good average but quite honestly i dont believe it. IMO a joystick is crucial for flying, for tanks not so much but then im no tanker. Its doable, but flying you'll come up against the vast majority who can react quicker and youll have a disadvantage which essentially means youll be toast. Joysticks just put you on an even playing field.
