Below is my almost finalised kitchen layout:

I'm going to have my hob on the island (posh like that) but I'm thinking about extractor fan options. According to my builder I haven't got enough space to install something like this Bosch integrated cooker hood as I only have a rafter space of around 25-28cm and this requires about 30cm.
As I can see it I have a few options;
1. Lower the ceiling just around the extractor fan area by 5-10cm or so to give me the space needed
2. Lower the ceiling everywhere so it's all consistent (really don't see the point of this IMO
3. Get a Luxair extractor hood that fits without lowering the ceiling height but requires an external extraction motor. Luxair Hood

I've never heard of Luxair so not sure on their reliability, are there other external motor fans that people would recommend? Or should I just lower the ceiling a bit?
I really hate those big island hoods so do not want those at all.

Cheers

I purchased a Luxair extractor for our kitchen refurb - the on wall over hob type, not posh island. Works great and was not complained about by our builder who installed it. Had it about a year now so no real chance to check longevity but so far so good.

I'm also not a massive fan of sinks in the island, but I don't mind hobs.

You're best to go for a downdraft, or you could go with something like this:

or

And make a bit of a feature out of it. Think it can look quite good if done right. Just consider where the exhaust pipe can go. I hate filter extractors, far better getting it actually extracted.

definitely get an extractor rather than a recirculactor , I got a recirculator and it isn’t great

Never understood hobs and sinks being placed on the island, feels like it just enables it to be a cluttered zone!

But yes, down draft extractor if going this route.
Personally... this as well

Yer going to the extent of the island, would look great as a lovely chunk of granite..... but then cluttering it up and removing it's flexibility.

The new hobs with the extractors built into them look pretty decent but my concern would be theyre likely just recirc

+1 for whatever you do sure it isn't a recirc. I don't have kitchen door on ATM and did steak last night, the extractor made light business of keeping the smoke away from the smoke detector.

Should be a heat detector not smoke detector in the kitchen.

I’m a huge fan of island with a hob as well but I wouldn’t put a sink there. Loads of room around the hob, have the a few drawers under it and spice rack beside it. Game changer.

I too wouldn’t go for the filter option, get that stuff outside!

Downdraft extractor.
The only issue is I do want to extract the grease to outside instead of recirculating it and dealing with that later.

That's great to know! Thanks!

I personally wanted the sink and hob to be on the back wall, but unfortunately it doesn't give me a lot of space.
Logically I would have to prepare on the island and then cook on the back wall, whereas with this layout I can cook and prep on the island.

I do like the second of the options! It's a much smaller box, but if I get the Luxair I won't even need the box as they're quite slim and all the work is done by the motor outside.

Yeah it has to be an extractor

Personally I'm not a fan of islands or hobs on islands but there just isn't enough space to prep, cook and clean against that back wall. So it was either the hob or sink going onto the island.
I'm a big fan of U shaped kitchens but they've completely fallen out of fashion

yeah I prefer U shape and galley style, so everythings in close reach

The one of the new builds we were looking at had a kitchen very similar layout to yours but with a return at the bottom as well.
Standard layout had the hob on the island :(

Only way to change it to a more "classic" layout was to pay like 6k to change from modern to classic cabinets which also altered the layout.
Flat out wouldn't let us have the classic layout with modern cabinets.

Shame as a massive chunk of uninterrupted granite always looks awesome.
And with the heat resistant nature of granite you get a great worktop for things like chocolate and baking helping to keep things cool :)

I also found the new build approach of a massive box above the island with an extractor in just really made the kitchen feel smaller than needed
iirc was about 1100 to switch the hob to one with an extractor in lol

I reckon it's fairly clear from context that he is talking about a smoke detector which isn't in the kitchen.

This was my a quick plan I originally made for my idea for a kitchen.
