X - Beyond the Frontier tips?..

So I bought the X Superbox on Steam a few days ago and have played about 6 hours of X-BTF.

I'm finding it very difficult as to what I'm supposed to be doing. I vaguely understand how to trade, as I think I'm supposed to pay that alien dude back 3,000 credits?

I managed to get 3,000 credits but can't contact him. Or am I doing it wrong?
The traveling is a bit tedious but it hasn't put me off the game yet. I also understand that the Universe is huge (duh!) and going through different gates brings me to new areas.

Other than trade, what else am I supposed to be doing? I don't want to jump right into the new games yet as I want to complete them in chronological order.

p.s. I've also searched for threads about X-BTF but had no luck.

Tip Get some money and Build a Solor Power plant if the patch's havn't changed anything would should make a good amount of money as I did back in 1997 and make sure u put it in a sector with 100% + suns
