X Box 360 compared to PC Graphics

Ok don't really know where to start here so bear with me;

Mate has a X Box 360 and I've seen COD4 on it, I have a 24" screen with 1920X1200 resolution coupled with a ATI X1900XT.

I don't have COD4 yet but wondered what graphics card would I need to get great performance? And what will it look like compared to the X Box 360?

Not sure on the performance of the X1900XT but it will look a lot better on your PC.

Thanks, didn;t expect a reply so quickly, that's a good start as the thought had crossed my mind to get a X Box but now a new graphics card will do the job:D

Forgot to mention my other bits are a Quad 6600 @ 3.6GHZ along with 2gb of 9200 ram all water cooled as will the new graphics card be.

Do the new 8800's work with the Danger Den maze 4?

Agreed.

Playing my 360 in HD allows it to close the gap somewhat, but tbh my PC is still moon-steps ahead in terms of image quality and realism. :)

As said above the X1900XT you have will easily give the Xbox 360 a run for its money. The Xbox 360 GPU is based on G91 (7900) architecture IIRC and the games don't have anywhere near as much eye-candy.

All 360 games have 4x MSAA right?
I wish. :p

Other way round. The PS3 has a 7800gtx type gpu and the 360 has the predecessor to the current r600 cards. It has 64 unified shaders and stuff.

I just thought i remembered reading that somewhere.

Nope, the PS3's is based on the 7900 series.

The 360's GPU isn't really comparable to anything... Kind of a mid-way point between the X1900 and HD2900 GPUs.

Ah yeah that's it, confused RSX and Xenox.

Xenos is R500, so a sort of advanced X1800.

It's comparable to a theoretical X1800 with unified shaders. ;)

Aye I read it in plenty of places before I got my 360 Elite, but was disappointed to find that the jaggies were everywhere in pretty much every game. It's probably 2xAA max and definitely only in a few titles.

The anisotropic filtering is almost non-existent too.

-ISH. Wikipedia states 48 unified shaders. The X1800 had 16 pixel 8 vertex? Seems Xenos is a little meatier in the shader department.

Not by much, at least that's what I have figured having analysed games like Oblivion and their performance/graphics on X1800/X1900XT level hardware right against the Xbox 360.

IMO if you get an X1950Pro 512MB you're already surpassing what the 360 puts out.

According to wikipedia, these shaders are capable of 10flops per cycle running at 500mhz. So it has 240gflops of processing power.

The 3870 which has 320 shaders whice can to 2 flops per cycle running at 775mhz, has 496 gflops.

So basically quite powerful.

Well what I gather from that is; you're basically saying that the Xenos GPU is half as powerful as a 3870, which according to this graph pretty much lines up with the X1950Pro.

Keeping in mind that's a higher resolution with actual 4xAA and not marketing rubbish, which lowered would easily get you an extra 10fps, I think it's safe to say that the X1950Pro is easily on par with an Xbox 360.

Does anyone know how many flops per cycle the x1900/x1950 were capable of?

Or is it not possible to compare between architectures?

edit: Im also beginning to doubt how i calculated the procesing power of the r600 gen. ATI always claimed the hd3870 497gigaflops which is basically what i calculated

777000000*320*2 = 497280000000 ~ 497gigaflops

But then

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_R600#Unified_shaders

this suggests that there are only 64 shaders capable of 6 instructions per shader.

Wouldn`t it be great if we could run our pc games like the console can? imagine how much qwicker games would run if your hole computer resources where completly used for running your favorite game, and be able to boot from the game disc.

I'd rather boot from the hard drive, loads faster. ;)
