X-Fi Elite Pro sound skipping when A/52 over S/PDIF?

I have a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro and when I use VLC media player to watch an AC-3 soundtrack on a tv show or film and set the sound output as A/52 over S/PDIF then the sound becomes like a broken record and is stuck and skips all over the place... I would think that as the sound processing is being done by the sound card/bo box then surely a bit of 5.1 processing shouldn't be too much to ask?

What is going on there? Or are my sound settings just wrong? thanks.

I never managed to get AC3/5.1 through SPDIF working when it was playing from a file. From a DVD was fine. I was using AVI codec, its full of possible settings but nothing worked for me. It may be that it only works with individual analogue cables.
Anyone know about this?
