I notice the gamer uses one of the crappy creative own ports for mic/line in etc. Are the cables to rig a mic up to it etc actually included? I would assume so but knowing creative....

Are you talking about the ability to connect the audio ports on the front of your case to the card? This is possible with the Xtreme Gamer, and the cables required are just those already connected to your case's audio ports. Other cards, like the Xtreme Music, don't allow you to do this and use Creative's own propriety connections so you have to use their breakout box.

Well - either using the front of box headers or the rear ports. The angle im coming at it from is "gamer"s would usually want to use a mic at some point. How do you plug a mic into the gamer minus the drive bay addon box or front ports with a compatible connector? If it needs an additional purchase whats needed and how much? Previous creative cards always had the standard mic and line-in ports, only just realised the gamer card doesnt.

Yes, the gamer has a standard 3.5mm microphone input on the back. The same socket is also used as a line in and an optical jack, and is changed using the software.

I really dislike this setup; it means you can't use 5.1 speakers with a microphone. :(

Sorry to hijack the thread, but under the heading of what cables the Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Soundcard (PCI) - OEM comes with, does it include a 3.5 jack to digital coax converter as I would need one to connect to my amp.

Thanks
