my soundcard is getting disabled shortly after startup. i hear the windows sounds at logon, and that's about it.

Sound Control panel says there's no audio, playback, or recording devices, but the hardware tab shows the creative sb x-fi, and clicking on it says the device is working properly.

I did recently upgrade winmedia player to v11, and that seemed to hose my flash plug=in for IE, a reinstall of flash and that's working again.

Sound works in games, but otherwise nothing? I did uninstall/reinstall sb drivers but to no avail  . Anyone got any ideas?

I tried this, sadly no change. If its any help, I get a visual studio debugger prompt at start-up complaining about an unhandled exception in svchost.exe.

To be honest its a weird one, I was hoping that it was a known issue, but it looks like an o/s reinstall is en route. :(

Thanks for the help.

ok. I had installed google's spy-doctor thingy, and ad-aware very recently. Either they don't play nice, or the recent combo of updates (wmp v11, etc) don't play nice together. But uninstalling Ad-Aware SE, and spy-doctor, reset things and I have my X-Fi card back in good working order.

I swear to God, this hardware nonsense, its mostly luck!!11!!!1!

Anyway, enjoy the hols, thanks for the consideration...
