X-Fi Speaker Assignment Issue

I have a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card installed in my PC. All was working fine with it for ages. I recently installed Microsoft Vista Ultimate 64 a few weeks ago. At the same time I got myself a new amp - Pioneer VSX-1016V. When I hooked it up to the X-Fi the sound wasn't distributed properly. However, there is a software programme called "THX Setup Console" that comes with the X-Fi which enables you to redistribute the channels correctly. After using that, it's been functioning fine. Up until a couple of days ago...

Now whenever I am using the PC for any purpose (music, videos, games etc.) and using the speakers, the realignment is lost. I can reconfigure it and the problem is fixed but it reoccurs endlessly. Sometimes for half an hour, sometimes a few hours. But inevitably, the error persists...

I have tried numerous measures to fix it. I was already using the latest drivers but I uninstalled and reinstalled those. That seemed to work for half a day but then the issue returned. I've tried reattaching the cables, and making sure they are all plugged into the correct places, but it all looks OK.

The intermittent nature of my problem leads me to believe it's a software issue. That said, I'm open to opinions and perhaps it is a hardware fault on either my sound card or amplifier. I don't have another amp or computer to test with though unfortunately. I also do not wish to reinstall my OS as that would be a royal pain in the arse, as I'm sure most people reading this can understand. I should also note that all my other equipment connected to the amp works fine. But my PC is the only one used, and indeed capable, for connecting to the "Multi Channel In" on the amp.

I did a bit of a Google search but nothing showed up regarding my exact problem. Can somebody help me? Its extremely annoying to have all my media on the PC interupted this way.

Might be the same, might be unrelated but I have a similar issue. Randomly all my 5.1 will go to hell, with all the wrong sounds coming out the completely wrong speakers.

It's easy to fix, just swap from 5.1 to 2.1 and back again but damn it's frustrating.

This problem started for me with the new creative x64 vista drivers, the old ones never had this problem. Try downdating.

Hey Baka. I think we do have the same issue - it happens to us both the same on 5.1 with X-Fi and Vista 64 with the latest drivers. Glad to see that as it means that a new driver will likely be released to fix the problem. That's no use in the meantime though.

Switching from 5.1 to 2.1 and back works for me also, thanks for the tip. :)

Any idea where I can get the previous driver set for Vista 64?
