Hi, Im using a 5.1 cinema surround system for my gaming/movie pc
Ive messed with all the setting for hours on end and cant get my card to send out digital! im using an optical lead. in the media panel im set for 5.1 speaker and optical out. but when i watch a film or play a game its 2.1 and pcm. ive set the 5.1 in the game too. there is an option for the encoder which is dolby live and dts connect but when these are enabled, i get error messages on media player and no sound from games? what am i doing wrong?

With the auto-update function make sure you install the DTS connect pack and Dolby digital live pack.

Also make sure the digital output is selected as default in the sound options. Right click the sound icon in the taskbar, volume control options, Tick the SPDIF Out and click apply then ok.

i have sound working at the moment, its just when i enable the dts or dolby live, when trying to play an mp3 with any of the decoders on i just get an error message on the media player , and even creative source player. it says spdif out (creative sb xfi) on my task bar i have updated everything. is the media player not working because mp3's are recorded in 2 channel?

yeah you have to have dts or dolby encoding all the time, as otherwise all you can get is 2 channel pcm over optical (other than already encoded dolby dts tracks like in movies)
theres no reason playing mp3s shouldnt work, they should work either with the encoders enabled or disabled (as optical can carry 2 channel audio anyway)
but it should definitely work with one of the encoders enabled.

and as mentioned above, SPDIF out must be your default output device, go into its properties and check all the settings look ok (they should be fine by default anyway)

cant see any reason for it not to work though as i had no problems with the same setup, although if your watching a movie that has a dd/dts track, it makes sense to disable the encoder before watching it because otherwise you are decoding the track to pcm then reencoding it to dd/dts (lossy process), a bit annoying but yeah as long as spdif is your default output it should pass the audio straight to your reciever
