X Fi Weirdness

After using onboard sound for an eternity, I got a Xfi gamer.

I seem to be having problems with the sound as it decreases and increases at random occasions? (ie during games, music etc)

Any ideas?

Turn off SVM

SMV can also make a hissing noise when no other sounds are playing. First I thought I had a faulty sound card

Also check your speakers, I've had some sets with a dodgy volume control do this.

Done all of the above, volume still goes up and down. At moment my speakers are practically off, but the sound is booming thru them, made me jump during an artillery barrage on bf2

Like alex says, sounds like a wonky volume control.

Got another set of speakers you can try? Or a pair of headphones?

I had this problem and it turned out to be a faulty volume control on my creative 6.1 speakers. They were well out of warranty but still got a new volume conrol FOC from creative
