I own FSX but havn't played it for a few years. Now that I have a new rig capable of doing simming justice I'm thinking of getting back into flightsims.

However, I can't decide between FSX and X-Plane. I'm leaning towards X-Plane as it is newer and more tuned to a modern computer and is still in development, whereas FSX has reached the end of the road as far as Microsoft is concered and is only kept going by third party developers.

So, which is it to be?

Difficult question as currently it depends on what you want out of your flight sim. X-Plane still feels unfinished to me and the whole world looks like America. With Aerosoft heavily behind it I suspect there will new products available all the time, but it needs them as many airfields are just so bland, with little or no buildings. XP has potential and as you say is under going active development.

But so is FSX in a way. Prepar3d from Lockheed Martin is based on the same core sources as FSX but is being developed. Most FSX addons will work in it and many FSX 3rd party developers are supporting it directly. (I'm not a Prepar3d user as there is no support available for the old FSFDT server we use in our flight group for multi player flying) Worth a look at maybe.

I prefer X plane it has more of a future and I love the model. But don't forget: http://www.aeroflyfs.com/screenshots.html

Don't forget to get TrackIR if your budget can bear it. I got mine for DCS Blackshark but end up using it in all the sims and even Dirt 3 and then most of all in DayZ to give me a real edge.

Wow I never even knew that existed, I need to research how good it is for a possible buy, thanks for teaching me something new.

Available for $50 for the academic license, however when V2 is released sometime next year there will an upgrade fee. There is also a developer license for $10 a month, that gets you 2 licenses and being a rolling fee I believe gets you the V2 upgrade as part of that monthly fee. There is a professional license too, but I doubt anybody not running a business will be up for that.

Yes it is, Switzerland only though I am afraid.

It is an amazing piece of kit but costly. You can have a look at this for cheaper way to implement it: http://www.free-track.net/english/

Sims or Arma2 it's amazing - dogfighting whilst whilst easily scanning the skies or DayZ lying prone just moving your head not your body to get a good view of the environment - it's just so imersive.

One thing for people to keep an eye on is what comes out of this: http://outerra.com/

Aerofly , I had it installed for about 2 weeks then removed it , did not like

What didn't you like? The model is a kind of like Xplanes but you are limited in the aircraft you can fly.

I didn't like the flight model and the gfx look great from 2km , but crap from any closer
All in all it just did not feel "right" , each to his own

Yep every has one they prefer I think you really need to give them all a go where possible. Anyways this is more my sort of thing:

The P51 will be epic ............. once we have 2 things

1. A realistic WW2 environment to fly in
2. Actual other WW2 aircraft to go up against

As it stands I see no point in getting it until it has something non modern to go up against.

I do like DCS world (apart from having to pay for the black shark twice)
the su25t is my most flown aircraft these days with the KA50 a close second
