Egosoft announces X³: Terran Conflict a standalone follow-up to X3: Reunion, calling the game a culmination of the space combat "trilogy" that actually includes four titles counting the new game (or five if you count the X-Tension expansion)

X³: Terran Conflict is a brand new, stand-alone game set in the universe of X³. It is the culmination of the X trilogy, with a grand finale that takes us all the way back to Earth's own solar system. Gamers can take on the roles of different characters in the X universe, or of a Terran military pilot, and experience a multitude of stories in the largest X universe ever featured - for X³: Terran Conflict will offer more missions than any other X game before. Meanwhile, X³: Terran Conflict will pose questions such as: How has Earth changed in all these years? And how will relations between Earth and its counterparts in the X universe develop?

X³: Terran Conflict is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2008.

If it has cockpits back in, bullitin boards with double the content of x3 with minimum of 20 missions at any one time out of hundreads to choose from and has a new race and bunch of new wares to trade instead of boring never changed for 4 games one then i "may" buy it.

As i loved x btf it was cool i like being in a single ship actually and enjoyed the universe and story a lot. Xtension didnt like as no story. X2 i liked that as had loads of new stuff in and a gfx update and had nice feel about the universe its one of the x games i actually played for months and got a nice empire going although i found i played less and less after each month till i stoped when x2 expansion was announced which then later was scrapped for x3 (big mistake imo) X3 was utter crap imo it had less missions stations looked the same, no internal docking (crys) and worse of all NO FRIGEN COCKPITS which is the main reason i loved the x games for as very few space games use cockpits and i enjoy the ones that have them 100's of times more than games without. So i tryed playing x3 for a bit about a month i think got about 200k together swaped a ship i think done about 4 story missions 1 just after the tunnel thing and then stoped as was bored cos i done it all before in x2 really and i hate repeating myself in games.

Not to mention that they blatantly lied in interviews leading up to release. A month before release they were boasting about how the game would have many more BBS missions than X2 and that some of them would be branching and more interactive. A month later the game was released with even less BBS missions than X2...

Like you, I was a fan since the original (though I don't care much about the story missions) and X3 really disappointed me.

 X3 rules, just started playing this again and i prefer it to x2, its the difference in scale and vastly superior graphics that makes it so good.

i agree the difficulty in finding missions is annoying but with the XTM there are lots more types to chose from.

As for the cockpits thing just download the cockpits bonas patch that adds them if you must have them.

Internal docking lots of that around in x3 even more when you add the XTM(unless you mean the flying around inside stations which once you done it 2-3 times you just skip anyway).

if you install the XTM the stations as a bit more varied.

basically INSTALL XTM. changes the game completely adds lots of new content and even 2 new/old races ie Earth(yes you can fly to earth) and the Sonar(dont mess with these guys they will eat u for breakfast).

After playing both X3 and EVE Online, I will never go back to the X series - they are just to soulless. It's a shame because the game looks real pretty.

Awesome :D

Looks like another month will dissapear from my life around Q3 this year :)

Actually, on Egosoft's past performance it's more likely to be around Q2 next year, when the major show-stopping story-killing bugs have been removed. But still...

There ARE more BBS missions.

... They just appear less frequently than in X2.

Whilst this is indeed great news i would need to spend many hours re-learning how to play X3 no doubt !!! too many games !!!

Not when released. It didn't even have assassination missions (which were in X2) until a patch added them two months later. When the game came out it had only two different kinds of BBS missions that involved combat: "Help! I'm on the run from Xenon" and the rare "Xenon Invasion" - both of which were unchanged from X2, except that they finally bothered to fix the bugged rewards for the invasions.

It was a far cry from the "far more variety in BBS missions" they promised. They later added more missions through updates, but it was too late for me by then (Egosoft patches take forever). I just expected a lot more improvement over X2 (which I had played to death) than what I got in the box.

This is a quote from dubiously close to the game's release:

"Non-plot missions are more exciting and more numerous than in X2, with more interaction between the player and ingame characters" -Greg Kingston

Uh huh.

There were a huge number of other problems I had with the game which myself and others documented on the Egosoft forums. Things like the AI quickly destroying all pirate bases (which had no defenses - laser turrets didn't function and they didn't spawn ships for protection), leaving even the pirate sectors empty of pirates and draining a lot of the fun out of the game for me. Decreasing number of AI ships and multiplying M5s... But I wont contine or this will turn into even more of a rant :)

Anyway, I'll definitely give the new game a try and hope it'll give me more of what I want (I'm really not interested in graphical updates). Maybe I'll try going back to X3 with mods, I miss the series.

Fair enough. I didn't play it (properly) until patch 1.3. I gave it a quick go when it first came out but it was so badly bugged (and the storyline was broken for me...) so I just put it back down until it was actually finished.

X series has always been rushed out the door. X3 in particular was pretty incomplete and buggy at release but came good months later, and with mods/scripts it really shines. It would be easy to bash Egosoft into the ground but I get the feeling that because they are a small struggling company in a not too common gaming genre they get the shaft from publishers more than some big names do. But to their credit, at least they tough it out and go all out to fix it up.....eventually

So, although I'm looking forward to this new standalone exp, I'll be a bit reluctant to buy it straight away....probably wait til it has a few (inevitable) patches.

I agree with the general thumbs up. As long as the missions/cut scenes and story are significantly improved over X3, it should be a blast.

I hope the Egosoft boys get everything right this time. :)

Looking forward to this.

Personally I think they need to give more incentive to continue with the open ended game after finishing the campaign.

More BBS missions is good news. There were BBS missions in X3, the main problem being most of these were always outside your rank (no matter how much you levelled up, so did the missions) or simply non participant news items.

Most of the fun in X3 came from charting the map and the superb chillout music in some of the sectors (Home of Light, Seizewell), after a tough week on nights just sit in front of the computer chilling and dozing to the galactic scenery and music.

One other thing I would like to see (talking of galaxies) is more information on perspective, i.e. how far apart these star systems really are and perhaps spread things out a bit (like Freelancer) albeit with navaids so you don't get lost.
