X-Wing / TIE Fighter remake

Sigh, another one who had his hopes bulit up by the thread title, only to be summarily dashed.

I am disappoint!

Well back in 2009....

LucasArts President Darrell Rodriguez was asked whether the game might get the Monkey Island treatment, bringing it up to date for a new generation of gamers. Rather than blowing off the idea, Rodriguez issued the cryptic response, "We don't have any announcements now, but stay tuned. We will soon..."

Obviously changed their minds. Idiots!

It seems like this whole genre has died. Even on consoles there's no good space flight games. Someone could come in now and make a killing with a half decent game.

The average punter lacks the patience or attention span, so it wouldn't be commercially viable.

I'd think the action could be pretty instant to draw them in before giving them escort missions. Perhaps it's held back by the need(?) to get a joystick to really enjoy the game.

This needs to happen.

I remember going into town with my brother when we were younger. I picked up Dark Forces on white label, and he got Tie Fighter. The number of hours we ploughed into those games. Fond memories!

The genre is dying because these sorts of games provide a challenge, and are simply too complicated for today's ADHD generation

probably true :( Very annoying though, as lets face it, there are loads of us that would buy almost any new game that entered this genre. Surely it's a better bet than making yet another FPS etc etc etc...

I'd kill for a new space sim with a proper bridge or cockpit. The only one that's ever ticked all my boxes was I-War.

Simulators?

Not really, I don't recall the realistic space flight sim models of the final elite offering, which is just as well, as that utterly slammed its playbility.

I would kill for a modern version of X Wing V Tie Fighter. I was so disappointed when Balance of Power turned out to be the only expansion pack made for it.

Another space sim I would love a new version of would be Elite 2: Frontier!
