Hey, I've always been interested by these games, graphics and gameplay wise... I bought X:BTF all those years ago, but never played it, I also bough X2 a couple of yeas ago, the problem is that I never played them past a bit of flying around. Not sure why really, but I've kinda got back into gaming recently (i.e. got bored of all those mmos i played) and want to give X3 a try, is it worth playin X & X2 to "pick up the ropes" and the story? Or should I just get on with X3?

If your system has the minerals then go staight for X3 and play it regardless of what you might think of it. The first hour or two learning all the controls will be boring, but after it'll be the most open ended fun game you play I guarentee 
I would play x btf first for a great way to learn, plus you get ulber high fps cos of its age. Then play x-tension if you want (xbtf expansion pack). Now the trick between x2 and x3.
x2 - more content as in missions and cockpits.
x3 - less missions better gfx no cockpits.
Story wise, well if you want to follow the story you can if so get x2 then x3. But if you dont care about story as most dont seem to then go to x3 first. That way you arnt missing like mad the cockpits or the bulletin board missions etc.

if you think x2 is boring, x3 is pretty much the same.
