Graphics related question here for an Onboard graphics mobo, if I put a X1 PCI-express card into the X16 slot will it disable the onboard VGA automatically or not? Reason is tht its the only free slot for a board I want to buy and I want to put a non VGA card in the slot and still use the onboard VGA.

You're thinking of 16x PCI-E slots as if they were AGP ones.

Graphics cards use 16x slots, but they're not graphics slots. There are 4x slots that have a notch cut out at the end to allow graphics cards to be used in them.

Basically it's just another PCI-E slot with different bandwith available to it.

It just so happens that the majoirty of PCI-E 16 devices are graphics cards.

I think in the future, there will be motherboards that only have 16x size slots.

The limiting factor now would be the lanes that chipsets currently offer.
