So, I'm building a PC, and this guy next door just got a X1600 pro, but realised he doesnt have a PCI-E slot, so he's offering it to me for 50 quid.

So my options are to buy this 1600 for now, then buy a new graphics card in 8-9 months or something.

Or skip this and get a good card straight away, like X1900/1950 or 7900/8800

The thing is, I think its a bit pointless getting a 8800 right now, as not many games use dx10 yet, so it would probably be better, and cheaper to wait a while, for more dx 10 games to come out and/or the 8xxx series to mature.

On the other hand, if i get a x1600 to see me through the next few months/year, by the time i upgrade it would be 50 quid wasted too.

I like my games, but I don't play anything more taxing than Half Life 2

What would you do?

i would get the 8800, will last a good while. longer than the X1600 would.
and nuts to DX10, the 8800 creams everything currently with DX9
plus when DX10 has lifted off no doubt a new gen of cards will be available :)

It would be far cheaper to just wait, you'd have to ask yourself if it's worth it considering you'd be using an X1600 - they're very poor cards.

I'd recommend hopping into the MM, and picking up an X1800 for around £80-£100, and then upgrading at refresh.

Hopefully the competition will force prices down, plus there will be a greater range to choose from! :)
