Like many are saying at idle they dont really make much of a noise (can still be heard but its not loud) at startup they go to full then settle again and in games they go to about 60%.

My question -At what temperature does the fan kick in to about 80% and then full speeds? is it something like 90c? At the moment i think my X1800xt 256mb gets to about 70c max (stock cooling)

If the fan doesnt kick in until those temperatures surely the components on the board can take a load of heat, or, can be overclocked a load more?

My powercolour X1800XT 256mb is currenty at 670core 780memory

You can set the temperature curves with ATITool or ATITrayTools (and possibly rivatuner).

Personally, id never let any chip go above 60c... but its not a problem for me anymore :)

Well my x1800 XT 512mb can't be heard at idle, and under heavy-load i can hardly hear it too, if i go pretty near my case i can pick-up a slight humming from it, and it gets to about 69, i think to really kick in so you can hear them they must have to reach about middle 80's and up.

When i got mine i thought it was going to be major loud, and so would'nt be able to game when everyone else was in bed asleep etc..., but yes, i can easily as it hardly picks up from its 2D silent windows speeds, i still say my x800 XT PE was louder. :)

My systems pretty quiet too, got the freezer 64 pro running at 80%, which is about 1600 rpms, a 19dba PSU, and 3 80xmm fans which i have running at half speed so are quiet to, if i run the freezer, and the other fans at full (which is still pretty quiet), then i can't pick-up my x1800's hum at all. :)

When i have them all running full, the freezer is the loudest, and they are very quiet anyway when running full speed.

All this blag about X1800XT's being loud like a lawnmower almost convinced me not to buy one, but I decided to take a leap of faith and I'm not disappointed one bit.

These things are hot, 60ºc idle and 80ºc load for me, but loud? They are not loud. It sounds a bit like a submarine diving for a split-second on startup, but on desktop and in games it must never get beyond 50% speed because I never hear it.

I don't know what kind of case ventilation other people are using, but I think their cards are just getting so noisy because of poor ventilation or something.

Never heard them described like that before :D

/has visions of your room going red and a whoop-whoop sound when you turn on your PC...

on start up my x1800xt is pretty loud, but for 2 secs max.
idling and even playing games in near silent. it will spin up very slightly if youre gaming for hours etc.

ROFL, that's what I thought the first time I heard it. I was like "dive, dive!" :D

I think it's very subjective. I am very fussy about noise and would put quietness over performance anyday. I found my friends 1900xt too loud at idle. He had a well ventilated case (gigabyte aurora with window) and was running 3 extremely quiet 1000rpm fans. Even the quietish 120mm Akasa amber fans I have seen on another mates are too noisy for me. I think it's not just noise, it's the type of noise and how clean it is. Some fans click a lot, make motor noise, some you just hear air, and some buzz - especially ones that don't repond well to low volts. And then of course the more you silence components in your case, the more you pick up noise from other components, even PSU's which can buzz due to their coils. Right now my CRT is driving me bannanas as everytime I a maximise a webpage the back of the casing is buzzing.

I'll bet these X1800 and X1900 stock coolers are much quieter than the sucky non throttling stock cooler of my 7900GT.

Very disappointed with that card tbh.

My X1900XT is near silent normally, but I could clearly here it during Far Cry when I was playing in the Catacombs level, it bothered me enough to make me switch to headphones :(
