X1800 on AGP???

I've just read a snippet in one of the computer mags that they have a sneaky feeling that ATI are launching the X1800 on AGP?

I'd read previously that they had produced a bridge chip for PCI to AGP, and they were making that available to the card builders, but then it was down to them?

Have any of you guys heard anything from any other sources?

Ta.

MAYBE I could see ATi doing an X1800XL part, or maybe a bit slower, that would compete with the 7800GS.

Yeah, that would make sense Tute.

Given the ATI and Nvidia history, they've never really stayed out of each others markets!

Be interesting to see...

word on the street is there will be AGP x1700xt to compete with the GS

the chip isn't recent (it's called RIALTO) search for x700 agp's and you'll see they all use RIALTO bridge chips..

I hope this is the case, but it's an X1800XL or better :)

It'd be nice to have a better upgrade path - I had a feeling that they might do this as nVidia have launched an AGP card. There are still a lot of AGP systems around

Hopefully this bears fruit and it's not like the mistake on Diamonds website last year :)

I suppose it would make sense to compete with the 7800gs. Even if they only brought out a card as quick as the x850XT PE, if it had SM3 and few extra shaders I bet it would sell well. The only reason the 7800gs is doing so well is because it's the faster AGP card with all the latest features.

I just think that they should release a high end counterpart, like the X1800XT/X1900XT or 7800GTX so that AGP users can get a decent boost in performance

I agree with you ajgoodfellow, but the x8 on AGP starts to hit capacity at around X1800XT speeds. Even if tehy did make a X1900XT or 7800GTX512 in AGP it would get bottlenecked by the slot. A standard 7800GTX would probably be about the limit before you were just throwing good components at a limited technology.

EDIT: After a quick look around I can't find a single link to back that up. But i know i've read it once (on DFI street i think) and heard OcUks own tech boys tell me not to bother getting the A8N32 as the double x16 capacity won't be exploited till you can get 2 cards running at optimum speeds in SLi or they move on to G80 cores.

yea would be nice to see an decent new AGP ATI release, I am part way through building a shuttle system and the shuttle I want has an AGP slot so really I have got little choice.

So far I will be taking the BFG 7800GS OC if it fits in, unless a 1800 AGP is released.

I'm not sure, there were rumours a while back now about an AGP counterpart of the X1800 series, but it turned out to simply be a misprint on the Manufacturers website. I cant see anything coming for AGP now to be honest, the 7800GS has been released and even as you can see, it's not that much better than current AGP counterparts.

I'd not get your hopes up really, and even if it did come out i'd personally move from AGP to PCI-E and buy myself the PCI-E counterpart for a much smaller price.

Hi

If you haven't yet purchased the Shuttle I'd seriously consider getting a PCI-E shuttle now. AGP is on its way out, seen by the complete lack of current gen cards on AGP. When you come to upgrade next you'll have to move to PCI-E anyway

If people are running a Socket 939/754/LG775 system then yes. There are still people on Socket A, with AGP shuttles or Socket 940 where moving to PCI-E will cause a lot of problems

But being honest, if people are still on Socket A mate there really is no point getting a graphics card with the power of that, the Socket A cpus will just create a massive bottleneck, and you will never see the power of the cards because you have a ridiculous bottleneck via. the CPU.

It'd be more sensible to get a 6800GS or something like that, and i can still guarantee there'll be a bottleneck with that card :)
