X1800 XT performing properly?

Just received a new Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-121-SP).

I can see advantages, Tomb Raider Legends looks stunning in next gen mode and it is definitely quicker than my X850. My issue is that my 3D Mark 2005 score has gone from around 6500 to 8500. A noticeable increase but not as high as I was expecting/hoping as I anticipated at least 9K getting on for 10.

I realise my CPU is not very strong, is this going to be holding me back severely or is my card not performing as well as it should?

Couple of things I've noticed is that the CCC overclocking utility does seem to go all the way up to the top of the slider but does not appear to actually alter the clock speeds as they still report the original (lower than the advertised) core and clock speeds. The apply overclock settings to 3d only checkbox appears to be ticked and greyed out so does the overclock only kick in when running a 3D app?

I think that's about right for your set up. You'll get upwards of 9k easily with some overclocking (10k would probably be the ceiling though without some serious modding). Your CPU may be holding you back a bit, but it doesn't make that big a difference in 3dmark05.

does the CCC o/c utility actually work? Like I say, I ran the auto overclock utility but whenever I click apply, the current mem and core speeds go back to 594/700 or something which is below what the card should be at default (625/750 I believe). Can't use ATI tray tool as it doesn't support the X1800's yet...

Yeah score seems about right to me to, im suprised you get that high of a score, as i get that with my 512mb and an A64 3500+ all at stock, but even a slight overclock of the CPU can get about 1000 points or more extra. :)

I have the same problem, the gpu wants to underclock itself! lazy bugger! Does it give you a warning when you try to revert it back to what it should be? edit: i only get 8600 stock on '05

thanks guys for putting my mind at rest. Was obviously just expecting more than was reasonable. Still interested though how anyone goes about overclocking their X1800's.

hi all....

to overclock your X1800xt you need to download x1k overclock....which you can type in what speeds you want....

i then use ATI tool to get the temperature reading and to control the fan speed only....

there is an issue with ATI tool and CCC as regards to the X1800xt so i would avoid overclocking using these....

your score is about right....

overclock the cpu and the gpu and watch it rise....

cheers :D

With my old PM 740 running at 2535Mhz and my X1800XT running at 700/850 I got 9880 odd marks in 3DMark05.
Will need to run it again with my CPU running a bit faster and will try using the X1k Overclock utility rather than just relying on ATI Tool.

Should be able to break 10k I would think.
