X1800XT 256 MB

For the PSU, you'll need to check the 12v rail ratings; ATI say you should have 30amps for an X1900 XT system, but to be honest I've seen plenty of people running X1900s with considerably less.

Personally I'd go with an X1800XT as the X1900 is somewhat overkill, well it is in my system and I have similiar specs to you. You could also do some overclocking on your CPU if want to minimise the bottlenecks.

Yeah i think the X1800XT as well.

Sapphire? I've heard good things about them. Also how would i check the 12v rail ratings?

Either on the side of the PSU itself, or they are written on the box if you still have it. :)

Welcome to the forums btw. :)

My 512mb x1800 is a Sapphire, cracking card, had no problems at all with it.

Heh thank you, but i've been around for kind of a while, i just don't post much. Which is a shame really as i should, you're all a good bunch here.

my x1900 xt on full is stupidly loud, even at 50% it drove me mad so i got a Artic Cooling Accelero 2 jobbie for it and now i put it on 100% and i can't hear it at all.

As a reference its holding 40c now and goes too around 55c when i game.

I'd recommend against the X2 as supposedly they blow hot air directly onto your motherboard (and heat up the chipset like mad in a lot of cases.) I've also heard testimonials about them not being removable from the card once it's on, would like some confirmation though.

Doh. OCUK doesn't have a X1800XT 512mb. And i realise under the rules you can't link. Need to go look.
Eh? Plenty on this page, but really, 256MB is more than enough (especially if you have plenty of RAM.)

Sapphire, HIS, Powercolor are all good brands as far as i am concerned. I have owned cards from all these manufacturers & had no problems at all.
I would get either the ...
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB
or if playing at higher resolutions the
HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB

lol thats a lot of power consumption. maybe you would rather go for a 7900gt. you will deffo not need a new psu for that.

x1800xt + new psu = very expensive card. thats why i not bother taking that risk.

They're dual 12v railings. Doesn't that mean it's the sum of the 2 amps together is how much power i have available, so effectively i have enough for the X1800XT?

Yes, that's more than enough amps for the card ;)

£160 does seem like a bargain but will it still seem like a bargain come March next year when the titles come out. Do you guys reckon it will run the new titles like Hellgate London, Stalker and such.

It will run those titles, but who really knows how well? The best you can hope for is getting a good deal NOW! In a years time they will be selling these cards for £50, but at least you'll have had a years fun out of it :)
