X1800XT 256 or 512mb

I see there is a 1900GT is that a good or bad card beside the X1800XT.
I want to at least be able to play latest games smoothly it doesnt
always have to be max detail, and wont be going over 1280x1024
And can anyone recommend brands or are they all much the same

a 7900GT is pretty much on a par with the X1800, better in some things, not so good in others. Either card should do you proud at 1280x1024 with pretty much everything turned on in pretty much any game out there for under £200.
oops, sorry, just noticed there is an x1900GT. Don't know much about that one tbh.

I have a 256 Mb X1800XT. I find that, playing Dungeons & Dragons Online at 1024x768, the display stutters if I set the textures to "ultra high", even though the average frame rates don't drop. With the textures set to "high" (and every other setting maxed out), the display is very smooth. I assume a 512 Mb card would be fine with the textures set to "ultra high". If so, there are (slight) differences between the 256 Mb and 512 Mb cards even at resolutions as low as 1024x768.
I bought the 256 Mb card because, given the games that I play and the resolutions that I use, I couldn't justify spending the extra £65 (now £53) on the 512 Mb card. That is over 30% extra, after all.
So, my advice would be to go for the 256 Mb card, unless you know for sure that a game you want to play will benefit from 512 Mb at the resolution that you use. Otherwise, you could just put the £53 you've saved towards your next graphics card upgrade.
The X1900GT has a slower clock speed, but more shaders, than the X1800XT. I believe that the X1800XT 256 Mb is faster than a X1900GT in current games. The situation may change when newer, more shader-intensive titles come out. But then, the rate of technological change with PCs is such that's it's hardly ever worth paying extra to 'future proof' a PC purchase. It's better to buy the components that you can make the best use of today, then put the money saved towards your next upgrade.

The above was confirmed by Gibbo when these cards where released, aint see any benchmarks tho

Yeah Gibbos already said the x1800 XT is faster than the x1900 GT, there is a review somewhere showing it, ill see if i can dig it out, id go for the 512mb x1800, its faster than the 256mb at that res, its only lower resolutions where the 256mb one is the faster, using one here at 1280x1024, runs everything, even runs Oblivion fine maxed everything with 2xAA/16xAF+HDR on.

They are all great cards and none will dissapoint you. The ATI X1800 XT has the most raw power for current games but some people dislike the drivers and noise/heat levels.
The X1900 GT is lower voltage and no doubt runs cooler and quieter, it is slower than the X1800 XT in most games but that could change with future games.
The 7900 GT is quiet and runs very cool plus some people preferre NV drivers.
You can't go wrong, OcUK has the best prices pretty much out there on all the cards in this price area and all are absolute bargains for the power they punch.
