Argh!

I am trying to use my hdtv as a secondary monitor but would ideally like to have it just clone what is on the lcd at a higher resolution. When I use the catalyst control centre in clone mode it makes both displays the same res. Is there any way around this?
 
i tried doing this also and had no luck, i dont think you can use clone mode with 2 diff res's but if amy1 has succeeded please explain how, i was using a 17inch at 1280 x 1024 and a 32inch at 1360 x 768
