Hey, my Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 is what i feel not performing well. Lets take CSS for a example of a game.

Most places i will get around 70-150 fps which is great but once i get more 1 enemy on the screen and get involved in a firefight my fps drops to about 25-30 which makes the game slightly jolt.

I have the most upto date ATI drivers and i havent overclocked (I couldnt when i go to the control panel it says not activated)

Anyone got any ideas as im off to lan in a few days and need pc in tip top condition :p

Could it be heat? - i have 2x12cm fans, one 9cm and one exhaust fan going. and i dont get any artifacts.

Also with fear, i got that new fear mp game, im sure a x1800xt could run it on high graphics but it does jump a lot.

Thanks for listening - hope someone can help ;)

Ta,
B

What 3dmark scores do you get? Is your cpu running at stock or overclocked?

3dmark - is that the thing which shows a plane thing and spins around for a while? If so not sure i did it and will post results up later when im @ home.

On my previous post i said i did not overclock.

Ahh right sorry I didnt read it all, just looked through it quickly, yeah your cpu is holding you back a lot - That will explain why on certain areas your fps is really low, but other times it can manage high fps.
Run 3dmark05 and tell me your score, but I already think its simply down to your cpu, its best overclocking it, could reach over 2.5ghz guranteed probably.

EDIT: you said in your first post you didnt overclock you GPU (graphics card), which is fine but you should overclock your cpu, thats your athlon 3200.

Yeah thats 3DMark03 with the planes, for referance in that i get 15,907 with everything stock, thats an A64 3500+, 2gb Geil Value 3200 Ram, x1800 XT 512mb on an Asus A8R-MVP Xfire board, so a 3200+ will probably be a tad lower, you could also try 3DMark05/06 to see what you get in those. :)

Assuming he's on A64, that 3200 should do the job just fine. Don't have any issues with CS:S here on X1800XT 512 and a stock X2 3800. Its the same real CPU speed, and since CS:S isnt multithreaded the performance should be the same...
Do you have AA/AF enabled at all?

Everything is relative, what you might find acceptable he might not, but its definitely his cpu thats down to the low fps in places of high action.

net_graph 1 shows FPS. I've not seen it drop below ~ 65, mostly sits ~ 120 on non HDR levels and 75-80 on HDR enabled.
Would certainly notice a drop to 20/30fps

what rez are you running the game at and what AA settings? it sounds as the gfx card is crapping out when there is a lot of stuff on screen to render.

57 idle  aint that warm ive not got the x1800xt yet im on x850xtpe [40idle] and buying hopefully the x1800xt this week if all goes well when i sell my current one :)

Yeah, it's normal. Stock cooler - idle 57, load 77. Zalman VF900 (low fan speed setting) idle 44, load 57. Those numbers are all from an online review of the VF700, VF900 and AC Accelero X2 tested with the X1800 XT.

I get the same temperatures as above with the stock cooler, so you can see it's not great at keeping the card cool, and I'll shortly be buying a VF900

This card is i think, mine is at 54C atm, goes no higher than 86C under load. Thought it was high myself but the card quite happily runs at this temp as normal, with max overdrive clock
