Something that someone in my other thread said has made me think that perhaps it would be better to spend less on the graphics card due to the near release of DX10. I have a couple of questions that would be nice to find the answer.

1. How soon will DX10 become a prerequisite for gaming?
2. How much of a graphics/performance hit will I see from an X1800XT compared to an X1900XT?

The X1800XT is the Connect3D model and the X1900XT is the Sapphire model.

I went for the x1900xt even though I will be upgrading to a Dx10 card next year...

Shame. I was hoping that there wouldn't be that much of a performance hit. I'll stick with the X1900XT then and try to gget a little more money for an E6600 over an E6400. Thanks for the reply.

Compared to what card does/did the x1800 under perform with?? The equvilent nvida cards at the time where the 7800 series and its better than those, and straight out of the box it is the same if not slightly better than Nvidia's next platform the 7900gt.


For the OP, what res will you be gaming at?? The x1800xt is still a very capable card and runs allmost all my games maxed out @ 1280x1024. Fair enough if you've got the money then the x1900xt is always going to be better but if you still want top end graphics and save some cash then the x1800 is a great buy.
 
I'll be gaming at 1280x1024. What I'm really looking for is a card that will be able to hold it's own until Dx10 come around. Also, what sort of reliability can I expect from a Connect3D model, I don't really know much about them.

At that res i think the x1900xt would be a bit overkill. Like I said my 256mb x1800xt runs everything I can throw at it at that res and never complains and for £160 its an absolute steal. My card will be seeing me through till dx10 and cant see it having any problems running games till then. As for Connect3d I personally have never had one of their cards but have never heard anything bad about them either and that card is recommended a lot so you shouldn't have any problems with it at all.
 
I have the sapphire card that seems to have vanished from the ocuk site, but the connect3d one is exactly the same just with a different sticker on the cooler. I can run Oblivion Maxed out @ 1280x1024 and get frame rates of between 30-50 outside even in heavy areas which is enough to play this game with. Other games like bf2 and Farcry ect i can play fully maxed out at the same res and average 80-100fps. The price of the card is extreamly good and it will see you through to dx10.
 
Wow. I'm very impressed. Perhaps it would be better to go with the far cheaper (and therefore disposable) x1800. What sort of temperatures are you getting as the ones mentioned in the reviews under stress are very high (80 +)?

My card idles at 50ish and gets to around 75'c after long gaming sessions, and thats with the stock cooler at stock speed settings. The cards can handle a fair bit more, 90+, without any problems but if you want you could always get a different aftermarket cooler that are reported to run cooler and quieter, but i've never found the need to.
Don't go for the x1900gt as it costs more and performs worse than the x1800xt.
 
While i have no doubt games that will utilise DX10 are coming, i think that games will be backwards compatible with DX9 hardware for at least 2-4 years still, as most gamers will still have that hardware. Sure you may miss the odd effect or more but the game will be playable. At that res the X1800XT is a very capable card. As for the X1900GT it is only slightly slower than an X1800XT, but may edge ahead if games that are more shader intensive are released in future.
 
Why do companies have to make this so difficult? From what has been said and also from what I have read recently, I might jsut get an X1900XT and be done with it. That card should keep me going for a while and if it doesn't then I'll just have to buy a new card.
 
Another vote for the X1800 XT, save your cash. I'd consider the X1900 XT if DX 10 wasn't coming out but for the moment my X1800 XT runs everything I play at max so I wouldn't see any real benefit.

Not the reason at all, the x1900 followed so quickly behind the x1800 becuase the x1800 was about 6 months late arriving, whereas the x1900 never had the same kind of problems and arrived on time.

what have you been smoking? ive had both cards and the difference is 5 fps in most games, the reason why it came out was because it was a revision that was pre-planned but the x1800 got delayed but the x1900 never so it was released soon after the x1800, if the x1800 was under performing how come it beats a 7900GT? the only diference is one has more shader processors thats all which only helps performance in some games otherwise the x1800 just stays about 5fps behind
