ATI adds another SKU to the X1900 series

There is a new Radeon X1900 series graphics card waiting in the wings. According to internal documents, ATI is set to release a single-slot Radeon X1900 GT with 36 pixel shaders. The card is in effect, a cut-down version of the Radeon X1900 XTX and is positioned to go toe-to-toe with NVIDIA's popular GeForce 7900 GT in performance and in price. CrossFire support can be enabled with an external cable connection to a Radeon X1900 512MB CrossFire Edition graphics card.

Qualification samples of the Radeon X1900 GT are available now with production starting the week of April 14th. According to ATI, support for the X1900 GT will be added in Catalyst driver 6.4 (ver 8.241) -- which ATI expects to release tommorow or the day after.

Here are the specs for the new card in comparison to the Radeon X1900 XTX:

The ATI part number for the X1900GT will be 100-435803. Samples are already apparently shipping to certain vendors and media. The X1900GT will only require a single slot cooling solution, but it is up to the AIB partners to specify the exact cooler desired.

Current GeForce 7900GT cards retail for just over $300. Vendors tell us pricing has not been officially announced, but that every sign seems to indicate that the X1900 GT will show up priced at or below that $300 magic mark. Since the Radeon X1900 GT is based on the R580 ASIC, there is already talk that an "unlock" might be in the works to convert an X1900 GT into a full blown X1900 XT. Coupled with good heat sink solutions, and ATI's new stance on overclocking, the Radeon X1900 GT might be the next killer card this summer.

I posted the same link yesterday, be careful as Google Ads is showing competitors, which is why I removed it later.

Another site is speculating that the Radeon X1900 GT may be OEM only, and not available in retail. Whatever happens, ATI needs a new product based on its R580 architecture to compete with NVIDIA's GeForce 7900 GT in performance and in price. There's supposed to be a Radeon X1900 XL in the works as well, but this seems to have fallen off the map.

ATI unwraps $299 Radeon X1900 GT

ATI has launched the anticipated Radeon X1900 GT graphics chip. The company's board partners were quick to follow the announcement - which had been expected to take place next week - by releasing products based on the new part.

As expected, the GPU, codenamed R580, contains 36 pixel shader units - existing members of the X1900 family incorporate 48 pixel shaders. The core is typically clocked at 575MHz, with the GDDR 3 memory connected to it running at 600MHz (1.2GHz effective). The X1900 GT supports up to 256MB of memory, half the complement.

All the X1900s contain eight vertex processing units and host a 256-bit external memory bus. All three are compatible with the X1900 CrossFire Edition card for multi-GPU set-ups.

The new chip supports DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0. It provides high dynamic range anti-aliasing and sports ATI's Avivo video processing pipeline for decoding and encoding HD content.

ATI said X1900 GT-based cards are available now for around $299. Tul, for one, has announced a PowerColor board that utilised the chip, and we expect ATI's other board partners to make similar announcements today. ®

ATI CALLS it the Radeon X1900 GT, and it is better-specced than we might have expected the X1900 GTO to be.
The X1900 GTO was supposed to sport the chip firm's R580 chip but it won't, as this is delayed, so instead it will use the RV570 chip.

We might have assumed that the X1900 GTO would be clocked at 500/1000MHz, but this won't be the case. Instead, the X1900 GT is clocked at 575MHz for the core and 1200MHz for the memory.

So, as it turns out, the X1900 GT is R580-based is pretty much a renamed GTO with a better specification that we all expected.

This might be a sign that not too many chips are falling out, as we mentioned earlier. No-one expected this card to have more than a 500MHz core clock.

We also learned that the card will cost be around €/$350. It is meant to compete with Nvidia's Geforce 7900 GT that is selling for around €/$300 already. ATI's solution will be more expensive so we are sure it will eventually have to drop the price.

This won't be an OEM-only card you will be able to get them in retail. Samples are expected next week and the cards should be anounced and available during the second week of May.

It is a single-slot card

The card is single slot, looks a bit like a x1800xl, but uses the xt/x's pcb. It is recommended that you have a minimum of 400W psu, with 25A on the 12V rail(s). They oc'ed it from 575/1.19 to 649/1.43, but it was unstable due to heat. It became stable at this speed after installing a stock x1900xt cooler. Therefore, a 3rd party cooler would be a much better option.
