ok - which to go for - got about 250notes, not changing anything in my sig appart from the GPU so i need honest opinions here - is it even worth it at all?

cheers

I was in a similar position, but was persuaded to stay with my x1800 for the meantime, apparently theres some new cards around the corner. :)

ah right ok - its just that my X1900XT is still a stonking card (albeit noisy!) and can run most things on max. Its just that my AMD setup isnt exactly a high end AMD setup and its gonna start to lag and im guessing Crysis will be a no hoper really. Im one of those greedy gamers who likes to play games at max and feels sick when he has to turn the options down lol!

Im guesssing a whole system overhaul to C2D is the only real option for the future?

Well your card aint going to max new games and if you did throw in a 8000, your CPU would limit it in some games.

So if you really like games the way you claim you build a new rig ASAP.

keep everything bar the cpu and pick up a cheapish X2 3800/4200 and oc it to 2.7+. then maybe fit your XT with a third party cooler. total outlay £60-70 ish result nippier + quieter pc. Save the remaining £180 until after xmas and see what hit's the market then fella

I agree with MOD and is exactly what I did with my system.

No point upgrading just one part of your system when you cpu will let you down.

Buy a 3800 or 4200 dual core

£40 or £70 depending which you go for but both overclock supremely well (my 4200+ runs at 2.75 ghz with no extra voltage).

sell your old one on the bay - i got £35 for my 3200+ - there are some mad people out there :d

this will make a huge difference to games and generally in xp full stop.

i went from an x800xt to a 8800 gts 320mb which was also a massive gain but from tom's hardware page you woudn't see anything like the boost i did.

i would stick with the x1900xt for now albeit add a 3rd party quiet cooler and you will be fine until you see what the new cards from nvidia are like at xmas.

the increase to a 8800 gts 320mb would be about 28% on average according to this:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/chart...2,441,444,445,449,451,450,453,448,447,455,454

But this will only apply if you upgrade your CPU as well.

If you really want all the eye candy now and those £250 notes are burning a hole in your pocket then upgrade the CPU which will cost you about £20 after selling your old one and buy the 8800 GTS 640 Mb with the rest of your money. You should still have change once you sell your x1900xt since they still make good money on the bay.

Take my four year old x800xt - some idiot bought it for £50

Agreed. CPU upgrade to X2 and 8800GTS (or wait a while) for a bit more life in your current rig.

If you get a lower-end X2 don't forget to see if you can push the speed up.

No. Assuming you're on 939, 2x1mb cache models are the the 4000x2, 4400x2, or 4800x2 and the opterons I think (correct me if I'm wrong).

On AM2 the Windsor cored x2 chips with 2x1mb cache are again the 4000x2, 4400x2, 4800x2, 5200x2, 5600x2 and 6000x2. None of the newer Brisbanes have the 2x1mb cache.

Hope that helps, anyone feel free to correct me if I'm worng.

I wouldn't get too hung up on cache amount. Having 2x1MB instead of 2x512kb seems to be about the equivalent of a 200MHz increase in clock speed (depends on benchmark).

I'm not sure there ever was a 939 X2 4000+.

If your MB supports them don't forget about the 939 Operons. 180 and 185 aren't bad at stock and overclocking the lower-end ones isn't too much of a chore. All the dual core ones have 2x1MB cache

A 4400+ can be had at about £50 at auction and should give you a nice boost.

I'd hazard that it'd be a cheaper and more worth while upgrade than your graphics card. That is if it had to be one or the other.

Get yourself a nice new CPU/Mobo/2GB Ram for about £170 in total and sell your other stuff, with the money made you'll be at least halfway towards a 8800GTS 320MB I expect.

No point going with an 8800 with single core.

Ive just found a Opteron 165 for £55 all in.
opteron 165@ 2.6ish + 2GB Geil Ultra X - HIS ATi X1900 XT 512 - 200GB HD - Gigabyte Nforce 4
Should bo the biz for a good while, then upgrade the x1900xt when needed.

Yes, and no. the 4000+ is much faster at runing a single app, the X2 will be faster in most multi thread applications and should become faster still with newer software.

Get any of the 939 dual core 2x1mb Opterons(165-185) and clock the Devil out of it. Ive got a 180 just on 3.0ghz, it's impossible to tell it apart from my overclocked c2d system.
