Ok I've just picked up an x1900xt 512MB for £125 delivered from OCUK clearence. It's a stop gap upgrade from my x800gto2 until some DX10 titles are out that actually need or show a large improvement from DX10 over DX9. Bargain! Way more than 8600gts performance for way less cost.

I was slightly concerned about buying a DX9 card but if you think about it there is still quite a long time until the DX10 games that really benefit from it (I'm guessing Crysis will be one of these) are due to come along. By then hte DX10 card market will have matured a little (price drops, DX10 performance reviews etc) and I'll be able to make a more informed purchase.

Edit: Can you all tell how desperate I am to convince myself this was a good idea? :P

Ooh. Nice. I just spent £120 (inc postage!) on an X1950XT elsewhere, though it's only 256mb. I'm with you on the DX10 front. I currently use a BFG 7600GT OC and was going to go for a 8600GT but decided I wanted more oomph for the games I play now and £120 for an X1950XT seemed like a good deal to me, especially as I could probably fetch £70-80 on fleabay for me 7600GT, maybe more if I chuck in my Zalman VF700 cooler. Though I just discovered my PSU only has a total of 27A on the 12v rails and the new card needs 30 apparently so I might have to fork out for a better one.

The 8600GTS are a waste of time and money according to the powers that be out there - spend a little more and you can get a 8800GTS instead for way better performance. I'd rather spend a little less and get better performance ;)

yeah its a good choice, the x1900xt is still a brilliant card, Ive got my 8800GTS for dx9 games anyway, it will last me till september-december time, which is when i will get a new card and psu.

An Enermax Noisetaker 485w should be enough for this card right? The rest of the system is an X2 4200, 2GB RAM, 2x hard drives, 1x DVD-RW, 2x Fans.

Unless you are going to upgrade to Vista you are'nt going to be running DX10 anyway. I got my 8800GTS for gaming now, on DX9. Stuff Vista!! The only way i will get that is if i have absolutely no other option. My XP home does everything i want it to do and more. DX9 cards are starting to be heavily reduced now so you may as well snap them up while you can.

Good card for the money, competitive with everything below the 8800 series and also sporting 512meg RAM. Can't see anyone buying 7950GTs or 8600GTS' until these puppies run out.

Yeah fantastic cards that can still handle virtually every game at max settings with respectable framerates.

Here is a nice review which includes the x1900xt 512mb along with the 8600gts and several other mid-high end cards. As you can see it totally wipes the floor with the 8600gts. :D

This is probably what I'll do after R630 turns out to be the disappointment I'm expecting it to be :p

Then just wait for the 8800GTS to come down to a similar price :)
