Friend of mine has an X1900XT and for some strange reason it will only play games in window mode.
If you try and launch a game in fullscreen it will just crash. We have tried OMEGA drivers and also the latest standard drivers. DirectX windows, motherboard drivers are ALL up too date.

Also the card is not overheating, it's all stock levels as the card is brand new.
I've also tried running 3dmark06 and this also crashes. It just seems anything 3d will not work. It's fine running mp3's videos etc.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Have you tried on a clean windows install? Can't be all that broken if it'll play games in windowed mode. Could be more a driver or Windows problem.

Thats what I thought, i've told him to format and reinstall.

Are you sure its not a PSU issue?

When gaming in windowed mode the x1900 runs at its 2D clocks, and only when switching to fullscreen does it cranks up to its 3D clocks = a lot more pull on the PSU.

It could be, but you need a seriously poor PSU to crash an X1900XT.

They can run with OCs on 380W PSUs that come with cases.

He is running a 450watt power supply so I can't see this being an issue.
He is going to reinstall windows in the next few days so i'll let you know how he gets on!.

remember guys its not just the wattage of the psu its the quality also - after all shuttle psu's can run a X1900 and they are 350w, but I certainly wouldnt try a 350w qtec lol

Yeah the power rating means little if it's a Q-Tec, I couldn't run an X800 XT / P4 3.2 Prescott on a 450W Q-Tec. However power problems are more likely to show up as the PC switching off, rather than games hanging.

Tell your mate to unsintall the drivers and run Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode to get rid of all traces of previous drivers, then reinstall the latest CAT 6.9s. If he's had an nvidia card running under than OS ever before he also needs to 'clean' nvidia files with Driver Cleaner Pro too not just ATI ones.
