Hi there

I got a Sapphire X1900XT on Tuesday. All seemed well. But the temps were near 90c which worried me. Well I played some F.E.A.R. and Serious Sam 2 with no problems. Then yesterday Serious Sam 2 just began to lock up after 10-20 minutes of play. So I ran 3D Mark 2005-6 a few times and both of them are locking up randomly causing me to re-boot. Sometimes they pass sometimes they don't. I'm using Cat's 6.8 with the gpu and ram at the default settings of 2D 500/600 and 3D 620/725

I think it might be heat from the gpu. My CPU is at 34c, NF4 chipset at 42c and PWMIC at 43c with the case side off. I have to say if it is heat then ATI shouldn't sell cards with crap cooling if this is causing the problem. I mean over 90c in an otherwise cool system is pathetic.

Plus I can't change the fan speeds with the basic Ati CCC unless I use Ati Tool or some other 3rd party software which quite franklly all seem to conflict with each other and give me more headaches.

Any ideas?

Edit: Well I installed ati tool and have the fans set at 100% when the temps get above 80c and so far no lock ups. Temperature seem to average at 75c now. Off course it sounds like a wind tunnel at 100%

Well I applied some AS5. I noticed the card has Infineon ram too. Not sure wheather that is a good/bad thing.

Hi,

Just a couple of notes,

you have removed the pci brackets on the second slots on your case I take it, so the hot air can leave the case?

From Catalyst 6.8 the memory routines have been enhanced, I think some cards won't overclock on memory as high as they did pre catalyst 6.8. I've seen posts complaining of artifacts ever since it's release. I had to reduce the memory clocks on my master card.

Raja

Hmm, this is interesting, I have a X1900GT with the single slot cooler, and this idles around 60C and hit 88-90C when under load (playing FEAR Combat).

I have a stuttering problem, so I'll have a go at reseating the cooler. Might be a bit 'off' ...

Yes I have removed the second PCI bracket. And I wasn't overclocking the card either so using Cat's 6.8 shouldn't matter.

Anyway being suspicious I decided to run Prime95 and Memtest for Windows again. Memtest for Windows ran no problems all night. But when I ran Prime95 'Custom' using 1700MB of ram I got an error after 4 hours. Strange as I initially tested with Prime95 with no problems. So I lowered my Sandy 3700+ from 2.9ghz to 2.8ghz. Then went playing Serious Sam 2. I played 4 hours without a problem. The gpu never got above 80c with fan at 70%. So maybe that was the problem. But it never showed up in any other game for 1 month since I have used these cpu settings. Anyway I'll play a bit today then run rthdribl @1600x1200 16 x Multisampling for a few hours and see if it crashes like it did yesterday.

I ran Prime95 all night with the above settings no problems 10 hours and counting.

Thanks

Michael
