Yes, another one of these threads... I have a budget of maximum £200 for a new graphics card and I'm surprised by how cheap these good cards are, I thought they'd be a lot more.

The question is, which one do I go for? I saw in Custom PC that the X1900XT can make mincemeat of most games, but is the X1950Pro better?

Hopefully they won't be noisy but they both have heatpipe options so that shouldn't be a problem.

I would go for the Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 XT, but that fan looks monstrously loud..

1900xt 512mb £205 @ clearance.

HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-048-HT) Price: £175.00 (£205.63 Including VAT at 17.5%)

its not the one with the swanky cooler though

I'm quite sold on the PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 512MB.

Simply because it's cheap and takes less power [it looks like I may have to buy a new PSU anyway since mine is a 400W job, and I have been running a 9800 Pro for a few years]. Is there much between this card and the X1900XT? By what people are saying, looks like I'll have to go for the X1900XT and try and find a quiet one. I don't know how quiet that clearance model will be

Hi there.

No matter what, you want to make sure you get the 512mb version of the Pro or the XT. The Pro version runs a bit slower than an XT but draws less power and is much quieter. I suspect that with a little overclocking that you could achive XT speeds and greater with a tweak.

Can I also stress how much of a jump you are making and that you'll be over the moon with the performance over your 9800 Pro. An X800XT Plat Edition is double the power of the 9800Pro and the X1900XT is double that of the X800XT Plat Edition so your quadrupling your graphics power with this move. WOW :D

I've still got my 9800 Pro through my room and I sold an X800XT PE and 7600GT OC earlier this year. The reason I'm stating this is that this card destroys them all. I think that all the three cards together could maybe win over the X1900 but we'll never know ;) :p.

Oh and nice soundcard btw ;).

The thing is... seeing as my PSU is 400W, will I have to buy a new PSU if I get a X1900XT? I may not have to get a new one with a 1950 Pro since the power consumption is less.

And yes, I love the 9800 Pro. It is making some games like Doom3 and Quake4 quite sticky past Medium quality but its a good little card. I'm just waiting to play Prey - won't do it till I get the new set-up...

I'd get a new PSU with either card. Just to be safe. I'm running a ThermalTake Purepower 560watt and it's ran completely stable regardless what overclocking I've been doing. :D You could always get the graphics card PSU unit thing. http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Power/PurePower/w0130/w0130.asp

Yeah the 9800Pro is an absolute classic.

x1900 XT spanks the x1950 pro as you can see here . :)

I still don't know why these guys dont sell those PurePowers, very handy if you don't want to buy a whole new PSU as you can just buy one of those and hook it up.

Thanks for looking, I'll probably get the Akasa Ultra Quiet 500W, it's only £70 and I'm sure it'll be enough power. My present PSU is an Akasa and it's run faultlessly for a couple of years now, and I leave my PC on a lot when I'm not in.

The Radeon X1900XT is clearly the better card looking at the benchmarks, even though the 256mb version is cheaper and within my price bracket. If I'm going to go for a 512MB card I'd go for the X1950Pro.
