Basically my girlfriends x1900xt thats spent its life on wow (poor thing :D) started beeping and we realised the temp's were over 100 degrees! yet when she just let it calm down again she'd get 30 mins use out of it or so before it repeated and did the same thing, but gradually over time it seemed to be more like 5 mins.

However, she realised that if she goes in a window, it seems to lock the pc to 30fps max (ati drivers bug i've heard someone previously say?) and it doesn't crash like this at all, and infact the gfx card fan doesn't seem to get any louder at all. Its as if the card isn't having to work very hard.

My question is, whats the prob? is it almost definately the fan on its way out? or more likely the actual card and things not easily replacable? Its probably only worth £40 anyway now as a card but if a gfx card fan for £20 would fix the problem then that'd be ideal as its still a perfectly suitable card for World of warcraft. Also worth mentioning is that the fan seems to have no problem getting very loud and reaching 100% very quickly.

Clean out the cooler, then if the temps are still too high reseat the heatsink appyling something like AS5 etc. If that doesn't fix it then it might be time for an aftermarket cooler :)

My old xt1900xtx did the same, the end of the cooler where the air is drawn in was partially blocked with dust. Cleaned it all out and blew the fan/cooler out with some "air in a can" and it was OK again.
