Hi all you knowledgable (sp?) GFX people.

I need help... No not just in general - about one specific thing... to ditch or not to ditch?!?

I currently have the following rig...

Athlon X2 3800
MSI Neo 2 Platinum CrossFire Mobo
2Gb OCZ RAM (2.5 CAS I think)
S-ATA Samsung HDD (160Gig)
Tagan 580W modular PSU
NEC DVD Burner
Floppy yada yada yada
AND.....
A Connect3d x1900xt-x

Now I'm pretty sure I could get 200ish great british pounds for my GFX card and also could possibly get an x1800xt for around the £110 mark. Worth the downgrade to have that few extra £'s???

Now the answers to the questions you're likely to ask...

I have a 20.1" Phillips WS TFT @ 1680x1050 resolution

My gaming time is split as follows.

CS:S - 99.5%
F.E.A.R - 0.25%
Random internet games - 0.15%
Solitaire - 0.1%

Would I notice all that much different. I hope for opinions of people with similar setups that have maybe tried both (A lot to ask I know...)

Toms Hardware shows 1600x1200 comparison with all the eye candy on and there's about a 15fps drop (75 to 59 iirc)

I don't mind turning some of the glorious detailing down but on the same note don't want anything to look/run gash either.

Thanks for your time

Sean ;)

As all you play is CS:S then for the extra money in your pocket it would be worth it.

However do you see yourself wanting to play any of the upcoming games?

If so it may just pay to keep hold of what you have got rather than having to upgrade again in the future. (You may not have to upgrade but there is the possibility)

Looking at the amount of CSS you play I'd swing for the X1800XT. Will handle it no problems whatsoever with an ice smooth framerate.
For example I get around 300fps on my 7900gt in 1920x1200 for example (although that is using a tweaked config) :p

I was thinking same about future-proofing thing but I'm sure the x1800xt still has some future in it. Well at least I hope so cos based on my initial thoughts and your inputs' I've started the wheels in motion on getting one :)

Thanks a lot for the quick responses and thanks for confirming my thoughts.

Let's hope I get a good price on the 1800 as well as the 1900....

Off to MM
