X1900XT's.......how noisy??? (wrong section/broken GPS)

Looking to get a 1900XT for folding but am a tad concerned about the noise levels with these things.

I am not a gamer so the gpu noise won't be getting masked by game soundtracks etc.

Just as a guide......how noisy are these things compared to, say, a Thermaltake Smartfan2? (at medium to high revs).

My rig is relatively quiet at the moment and hope to keep it that way as much as possible.

I suppose I could buy an aftermarket cooler later but just want a guideline for now so the noise from the new card doesn't come as too much of a shock

The above question based on the cooling on a Sapphire model.
Would prefer to try a HIS but there's no ETA on them....maybe try one next time.

Feedback appreciated.

hmm, idle my psu is louder than my card, you wont ever really hear it clock right up in speeds unless its under really heavy load, the loudest sounds the 1900 will make is on startup when fans run 100% for afew secs

Yup it will be almost silent if your not gaming, as said only spins up to full speed for about 2secs on startup, but if it does concern you then get the HIS SILENT. :)

excluding the HIS version 1900xt's are pretty damn loud once they hit 60%+ RPM

i have no experience of the Thermaltake Smartfan2 but if you have a quiet rig you will definitely notice the noise once the card heats up.....although if you stick with CCC to control the speed it keeps a pretty low rpm until 70-80c from memory.....i have mine under water for awhile so it's hard to remember.

how much does folding use of the core?

Re folding......is all speculation at the moment.
Open beta begins tomorrow......will take a chance on the cheapest 1900 and get an Arctic cooling replacement cooler thingy if need be.

Will try the HIS for second rig upgrade.

Think I read that folding gets gpu up to around 60c so maybe the fan will be at lower revs?

Wrong section... this is for CPU's. :)

  he is asking about the gfx card and this is the gfx card forum. so whats wrong with this thread?

edit: my bad i just saw this thread moved from the cpu forum.

Yup it was quietly relocated :)

Thought I was in general hardware, was about to post about psu's.....kids distracted me.......came back with a different question, forgot to switch forum sections :D

yeh at 60c CCC doesn't consider this hot enuff to start the leafblower :)

Why exactly do you need such a powerful card for folding?! I thought it was all CPU based.

With adequate cooling in your case (3x120mm fans cooling mine) the sapphire X1900XT under full load cannot be heard :D
