Apologies if all this has been said before, if so please provide a couple of links that I can trawl to get the answers...Ta!

Back in march I purchased an Asus X1900XTX graphics card, at the time it
was the fastest one around and Crossfire looked promising. I am now
looking for its Crossfire counterpart. The following page implies an X1900
CF card is the way to go.

http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/charts.html

These cards seem to be pretty rare, and I cannot find an Asus version
(EAX1900CF?) anywhere! There is an HIS equivalent on OCUK, but my concern was that different manufacturers may not be completely compatible.

Does anyone have experience of

1. Compatibility issues between manufacturers?
2. Using an X1900XTX with an X1950CF instead of an X1900CF?

This will primarily be used for Everquest 2 @ 1600x1200.

1. Does anyone have any experience Crossfire configurations with EQ2?
2. Has anyone experienced frame rate increases running in Crossfire mode
compared with a single X1900XTX?

I have read various other threads that suggest replacing my existing card
with an NVidia 8800 GTS, which I may consider at some point. I am quite
keen not to replace the hardware with an Intel Core Duo, that will be way
over my budget. I appreciate they are quicker, but cannot justify the
cost.

Motherboard: Asus A8R32
Processor: AMD Athlon X2 3800+

Thanks for all your assistance, all views accepted of course :)

You can get the Mastercards off Fleebay, but don't think its worth it!

Frame rate improvement with crossfire 1900xt's wont be as good as a single GTS! You won't need to go C2D to run the GTS, Go for the GTS definatley! ;)

Heres a thought, does anybody know if I can put a GTS and still keep my X1900XTX plugged in?

My m/board supports 2xPCIe x16, and there is potential (?) to upgrade to triple-head. I already have dual-head. I suppose I could run the games off of the GTS, but keep another pair of displays for other stuff.

Any idea if you can select which graphics card is used by a game?

Thoughts?

Yes, ive tried it, x1900xtx + 8800gtx with 1 output on the gtx and 2 others on the x1900, works a treat as long as you install the drivers for the x1900 through device manager and not the .exe :)

My x1900XT+CF is faster in most games and benchmarks than a vanilla 8800GTX

i.e. 3dMark01 59,000
03 36,000
05 20,500

with 3Dmark06 is only just slower i.e. 11,100

If you can find cheap CF card then it's going to be more cost effective than a 8800 GTS

According to ATI you can use a X1950CF with a X1900 card.

Not true A 1900xtx in crossfire will beat a GTS

yh i agree, 3d mark is the best game ever.

OP: sell your x1900 whilst its still worth a fair amount and get an 8800gts, its dx10 & sm4, faster than the x1900 and should be around the same speed as crossfire'd x1900's.

Also, 8800gts' seem to have a good headroom for overclocking :)

Yeah x1950 CF master cards work with the x1900's, but they are totally worthless as you can get a next gen 8800 GTS for £8 cheaper, you would be best off getting rid of your x1900 and getting either a next gen Dx10 8800 GTS/GTX, absolutely waste of money buying an old gen Dx9 card for £258 when you can get a next gen Dx10 card for £250.

Crossfire FAQ is here , click on question 3x to expand it, and in there is the comptabilty chart of what cards can be paired. :)

Welcome to the forums btw. :D

Lets get some prospective here

Ok its not 1900xtx but 1950xtx but even crossfired 1900xtx is faster than one 1950xtx & one 1950xtx is about on par with a 8800GTS.

But i would not go with the hassle of old crossfire master & slave if i did not already have it..
New drivers allow crossfire with 2 standard 1900xtx now.

one 1950xtx is about on par with a 8800GTS?

O-RLY

Righty then! now that i have finished my 13 hour shift i will explain what some of you already know but some are ignoring because its the 8800 card against an ati 1900xtx crossfire.

I said its about on par with & not that it is equal to or better i gave one example & there is at least a few more on that site that the 8800gts is not a big leap from 1900 in crossfire.

Most will agree that the 1950xtx is not a worth while upgrade from a 1900xtx with avg about 5-20 fps gain and there plenty of post of people slating the 1950xtx because of that.

Going from crossfire 1900xtx to single 8800GTS based purely on fps would be just like going from 1900xtx to 1950xtx not worth it.

If he wants the dx10 features & less hassle of the small chance that some games wont work in crossfire mode & that too many games would not be acceptable in single card mode then the 8800GTS would be the answer.

Thanks for all the replies peeps, its given me something to consider. I dont regard DX10 compatibility as a biggie, mainly because I wont be "upgrading" to vista anytime soon, so I may proceed with a crossfire system, rather than a new 8800.

Thanks again
