x1950 or 2600 XT AGP for UT3?

Hi. My friend just got UT3 and has a 6200 agp. He can only play at 800x600 with all-low settings and wants to upgrade as cheaply as possible so he can play at 1280x800 (native res of widescreen monitor). Will either of these cards be able to play at that resolution? If, so which will be better for UT3? No other feutures required.

This is his rig:

Sempron 3400+ 754 (2.0ghz 256kb cache)
2gb DDR 400mhz
Geforce 6200A AGP
300gb SATA

Thanks

x1950 is the better card for gaming but only DX9, 2600 is better for HD media and DX10.
the x1950 would be my choice of card

You won't be able to play with the 2600 XT with all the DX10 settings and such enabled. Just go with the X1950 Pro - it's a much stronger card overall.

The x1950 is also far more expensive at £117, the 2600 XT is £71. That's 64 percent more expensive! I doubt the x1950 is 64 percent faster than the 2600 XT

Thanks anyway.

That processor will be the biggest bottleneck ever.

I had a 3700+ SD at 3.0ghz with x1950 Pro and it barely ran at all. 1024x768 with all details set to lowest and it ran awful still. Then i upgraded to a dual core CPU and it now runs at full whack 1280x1024 with twice the fps.

Don't bother unless you go DC CPU as well. :)

That sounds worrying!

I will think about an alternative upgrade route.

I would consider going intel and getting a whole new setup, doubt that pc will have much life left in it when up against ut3.

Then flog the mobo cpu and ram on ebay to make some of the money back!

x1950pro is the better card but the 3850 AGP is on the way ......

EDIT: actually with that system i wouldnt bother. a 7600gt would be ok

As previous posts suggest I would set you sights at 7600GT, 7800GS at best - although increasingly these are second hand! you may not get the performance with an old CPU on a speedy 1950Pro or a HD card.

Ive tried an HD2600XT but returned as I had to use hacked drivers (Omega) for it to be recognised and then the Oc features of the driver crashed the PC, ATI addon for HD were broken as well. Seems ATI not supporting AGP very well at the mo on HD chips - beware.

AMD XP 3000+ @ 2.2Ghz
2Gb Crucial @ 400
NForce2-400 board
GForce2-400Ti
(waiting to be retired along with the rest of it)
