Just wondering with certain cards at pretty awesome prices at the moment, whether it would be worth (and indeed possible given my current setup) switching to a card such as the 8800gt or the HD4850? My X1950 pro has served me well but is starting to feel the strain a little on games now (such as GRID) when i turn up the settings

I have a feeling my PSU may not be up to scratch but i really can't afford to shell out for a more powerful one on top of a graphics card upgrade

cheers in advance for the replies

a 4850 would be much faster but your motherboard only has a x4 PCI-E slot. Buying a new motherboard would be the next step.

If you wanted to keep it cheap and simple then a cheap 3850 might be worth a look. A PSU that can run a 1950 should run a 3850

A 4850 should work on that setup and will work in the x4 slot so why not have the extra performance now and start saving again for the motherboard.

I can only really afford to replace one component right now as I haven't got a job at the moment. The plan is to replace one thing at a time when i have the funds. A new motherboard and PSU are on the list but i didn't really want to shell out right now for something when I wont notice much difference hence looking for a graphics upgrade.

Will i notice much difference with the 3850?

Also, i have been struggling to find a consistent measure for the power consumption for these cards as various reviews have them differing by quite a margin and i have no idea which sites to trust.

Order the 4850. Try it and if it doesn't work then send it back within the 7 days Distance Selling Act. I had a 560Watt with 22Amps on the 12v rail run my X2 @ 2.8Ghz, overclock on my RAM with three hard drives and ran the X1900XT (overclocked) which was quoted to need at least 26amps on the 12v rail and even booted up the 2900Pro although it would cut out in the middle of a game. My point is that sometimes you get away with more than you should ;). The glass is half full :p.

Yes, you can return it as long as it's within 7 days of actually receiving the item. It's just because you don't have the courtesy of inspecting said item in the shop before taking it home. So you then have the chance to make up your mind.
