x1950 vs 7800GS ...with a P4 CPU.

I'm still stuck on an AGP system, as I'm currently a poor student.

I have a 3.2Ghz P4, 2GB ram and a 7800GS (AGP). Not too long ago i upgrade from a 15 inch screen to a 21inch screen..and it hurt me in terms of performance.

I realise that the X1950 is faster than the 7800GS, but all the benchmarks I've seen are with a much better CPU than mine. Would the CPU be a bottleneck in my system and therefore the difference in the cards be minimal? Remember that I'm operating at 1680 x 1050, where the difference in gfx cards power is often more pronounced.

Any useful info would be useful.

An x1950 pro isn't too much better than a 7800gs anyway is it?

Most games are GPU reliant unless you have a really low end CPU like a 2Ghz Cely. Also, you'll notice a bottleneck if you have a really high end Gfx card like a 8800GTx and a weak CPU.

As there not much diffence in the cards, (correct me if I'm wrong :)) why don't you do a cheap C2D upgrade using an ASrock 775-DualVSTA and a e6300 for £150(Keep your AGP card and DDR RAM). Then you could get a different gfx card later if you need to (AGP OR PCI-e)

Just my $0.2 :p

P.S what PSU are you using?

Go ATI, it will last longer than the Nvidia card in terms of gameplay over time. The 7800 GS is still way over priced even if they are coming down on the old folding now the newer generations cards are out.

I currently have the 7800GS (I got it when it first came out). The question is whether the x1950 would give me a suitable performance increase with my cpu at my resolution :)

If you can sell your 7800gs then do it, you'll prob get around the asking price for an x1950 so you won't be any worse off (but I suppose you' be hard pushed finding someone who would buy your 2nd hand 7800gs when a new x1950 pro is cheaper, faster and new) I dunno (Bit of a waste of time this response was, wasn't it? :o )

Have you clocked your 7800gs?

Yeah my 7800GS is OC'd.

I still wonder about whether the gfx card will help, or if my cpu would just hold it back anyway.

I don't think your CPU woud hold you back, I just think you should wait just a little, you never know, dx10 cards may be available on AGP soon...... :p

If all you do is game, then it could be an "ok" upgrade. I would rather spend the money on a Conroe though. Even if the X1950 is 30 percent faster, the conroe would be at least twice the speed in certain condititions. (even with a small overclock).

150 for a Conroe and motherboard, and still being able to use your current RAM, and you have AGP and now PCIE slots, plus you can change to DDR2 ram later.

Yes, they are called Asrock Dual VSTA boards.

See here for more information

The only problem with them is that aren't the greatest for overclocking, but even if you could get a E4300 to 2.1GHZ or so, it would kill your P4 setup. Also this way, you can replace bits as you need to, say in 3 months replace the DDR1 ram with DDR2 ram, replace the GPU with a PCIE one, then get a motherboard, whatever you want really.

OCUK DOES NOT stock them though, so you will have to find them on your own. Check the Motherboard sub-forum, there is a rather large thread on these very boards there, so if you have any questions, it may be an idea to ask there.

Hope that helps.
