hey guys, jsut wondering if theres much performance difference between the 256meg one and the 512meg one??

would i be better off with the 512meg one from a future proofing point of view as i dont upgrade very often at all

512meg better only if you are gaming at higher resolutions nearing 1600! 256meg would do just fine if you dont plan to go higher than 1200.

*edit*. Even if you get an 8800 768meg for example, it would be completely useless on a monitor that only supports resolution of 1200.

Ram is manily utilised for extended textures, i.e, mainly used when you crank up the resolution!

LoadsaMoney's right! The 8800gts 320mb would be better from a future proof point of view! But is quite a chunk more cash. If you're happy waiting the new 8600 range is due to launch in just over a month and should perform very well! Prices could even be close to £100! :)

Sorry if that complicates your decision! ;) :D

only problem being its another £70 more and also it would be going in a shuttle. i know shuttle PSU's are just fantastic in terms of quality from my own tests etc but even still i reckon an 8800 would be pushing it, even for them

EDIT: it doesnt really complicate it much as it ont be for a few months yet, but its just nice to know before hand :)

nop, games like doom3 and quake 4 can make use of the extra ram easy. also it doesn;t have to be running in high rez to make use of that ram, running at 1280x1024 with 16xAA and 16xAF will help to eat up the ram, and having extra memory is just better future proofing.

The Trouble with the 8800 GTS is that is is big. You need to think about how much room you have in your case....

Wait for the 8600's and see! If the upgrade's not gonna happen for a couple of months then i'd wait and see what they're capable of! :)

not fussed on size of the card. i know they fit in shuttles length ways. and if its got a dual slot cooler then no worries, ill just mod the case again to fit it (currently modded for an arctic cooler) :)

its a bit of a tricky situation. I got out of PC gaming a while ago as I was just gettin bored onf PC games and seemed to use the 360 more. but now im gettin to the point where i want to play half life, cs,BF2 and try BF2142 etc

at the moment i've actually had a downgrade from an x800pro to a 9800XT because my projector refused to work on the dvi output of my x800.

so bascially i've got to buy a whole new PC (currently running A64 socket 754, ddr mem, agp card) but dont want to spend too much, where as on the other side i want to just go all out and buy some decent kit that'll last me for ages lol

theres also another side to it. i do comp sci and games tech at uni. last year we were usin 3D studio max, hammer editor and Half Life 2. I found my current rig started to struggle a bit with the bigger 3ds models (with my x800). i'm currently doin my placement now but by october time ill def be needin somethin decent to run that lot too

think ya probs right in waitin to see how the 8600 turns out

Maybe, just maybe, even less than £100 :D

I mean, if a card that retails for an RRP of $150 ends up costing more than £100, then we are getting seriously ripped off!

I think they will be a fair bit more powerful than a 7950 GT.....
So for that price, and add in the fact that they are DX10 capable, AND that they are VERY small length ways and nice, slim single slot cards and you have something which is HOPEFULLY going to be worth waiting for...
