x1950pro - 3870 XT?

The 3870XT is on average 15% slower than the 8800GT. It is also on average 15% cheaper.

It totally depends on how much you have to spend. If you can afford it, go for the GT. If not, you'll find the 3870XT is no slouch either.

has sli caught up with crossfire yet?.. as 3800's can be a fair bit cheaper than 8800 gt's i was wondering whether it would be worth getting a 3800, then when its comparable performance is fairly poor, getting another, as i've heard SLI isnt too great, or is it?.

Well i'm pretty sure Crossfire scales better than SLi. I also *think* it might not need profiles for your games but that i'm not totally sure about.

With cards like the 8800GT and 8800GTS around (G92 cores), the 3870 tends to look a little bit weak. But when chained together in 2 or 4 way Crossfire-X configurations, it closes the gap easily. :)

Depends on the game and the rest of your system...

As they both use similiar technologies both should give similiar gains in best case scenario... SLI support tends to be updated more frequently and is easier to tweak to get it working fairly well with games that aren't yet supported...

crossfire _shows_ higher gains but thats somewhat deceptive as any 8800 series card in SLI will give the same performance or higher in 99% of cases and the bottleneck often isn't SLI or the GPUs.

Running on an AMD X2 4800, 2GB and XP. Half Life 2 - EP2 runs lovely on the x1950pro, but UT3 is sluggish at times. I'm drawn to this cos of the cooler as well as the improvement over my current card. My x1950pro with the pre-fitted Zalman type fitter is very quiet and looks very similar to this one...

The zerotherm cooler on the powercolor cards isn't as quiet as a Zalman as the fan runs at 100% all of the time (bios locked iirc).

I used to have a powercolor HD3850 512mb with that exact cooler, it wasn't loud but it was more noticable than the stock 3850 cooler.

Going from a 1950Pro to 3870 gave me a nice boost, but make sure you don't pay too much for a 3870, at around £160, the 8800GT is a better buy.

The 8800 gt's can be snaffled for £140 ish incl del or lower, putting them on a par with the 3870's for price but gaining on power. failing that save yourself a few quid and go for a pre owned 8800 GTS ( old skool ) make sure you pick up a 640mb one. you should be able to source one for £100-120 incl not bad for a card that still ranks in the top 5 gpu's on THG VGA charts 07

You'd be better off with a 2900XT or 2900 Pro over an 8800GTS 640MB, the Pro models can be had for under £100 yet outperform the G80 GTS.

watching this with varied looks on my face. have a 1950 pro (agp) and havent a clue what to get... Mobo is now (hopefully) sorted as I just got a bargain Asus p5d2w so full 16x pci-e here i come (at last).

have never used aa/af in games (which i mostly play) and could cry when it comes to steam processors, rops, pipelines etc.. Layman terms would be good.

usually play on a 19" widescreen, but sometimes the 37" HDTV gets a look in..

I'd choose an 8800GTS 640 over a 2900XT, less noise and power and also does better when AA is applied..

I think you'd choose a GF4MX over a 2900XT tbh...

Dont be daft, I've had a 2900XT and GTS 640 and with AA the GTS 640 pulls ahead and with no AA the 2900 is not much better. The only decent cards at the moment from ATi is the 3850 and 3870, thats only due to there price, new process which makes them run cooler and the fact they use less power and are quieter than a 2900XT. A 2900Pro or 2900XT is not a good choice of card to buy, they are power hungry and loud, its either 8800GT, 3870 or 3850 and out of those the 8800GT is the best. Dont care what benchmarks say the 8800GTS 640 was faster with any amount of AA than the 2900XT and I've said it time and time again.

I don't care what anyone says or any benchmark, but my 8400gs is the fastest card!!! I KNOW BEST everything else is crap:rolleyes:

And what are you trying to say with that comment..?

From what I see you are trying to tell me just because I think an 8800GTS is faster does not mean it is, but you obviously have not read what I've posted. I have had a 2900XT and an 8800GTS 640mb (Twice) So I know which one is fastest especially with AA performance.

I suggest you buy an 8800GTS 640 and a 2900XT and post your findings with screenshots and possibly videos taken with a camera.
