I have offered to give my housemate a PCIE 256mb X1950 pro. However, I am not sure about his PSU. It is a 400W Antec with 23A on the 12V rail. Will this be enough? Cheers!!!

I've had 22@amps power my old X1900XT overclocked past XTX speeds with a 2.8Ghz X2 3800, 2 DVD drives and 2 hard drives. However this was a very efficient and old Thermaltake PurePower 560Watt.

It's meant to be 26amps but as you seen from above I got away with it but I had more wattage. I want to say give it a try and see how it goes as Antec are a good PSU manufacturer but if anything were to blow I can't advise you to do it other than I would plug in the card and test it regardless. At least you know of a possible outcome at least although I've never had it happen.

Always highlight the downside as if it works then you feel a whole lot better :). Run 3dmark06 for a few loops if all is up and running to give it a test.

Yea, that's what I was thinking JD-it all seems pretty borderline (although I've just found out I left the DVI/VGA adapter at my parents house so we won't be trying too soon!).

Oh the suspense!. Will you even be able to sleep tonight? ("will it run or not!!!!!!") :p. :D

I hope it does work and there won't be the need for a new PSU. Good luck :).

Cheers-he is actually considering building a new PC in a couple of months anyway, this would just be a stop-gap for him, so it isnt too major! And I wont be sleeping tonight, I'm way behind on my work for my finals!

Well if the card fails to run with stability or even at all then buying the PSU for his next rig now would be a decent idea. He could run this card and already have bought one of his future components ;).

Make a coffee, get some chilled out tunes on and get your head into your work. Good luck on that too :).

Like the idea about the PSU, I will mention that!

My work hasn't so much happened as yet-Arsenal Liverpool and then a celebratory session in the gym took precedence!

Hello manic111,

The ATI Radeon X1950 Pro will consume around 90 watts under load which equates to 8 amps. This would leave you with 15 amps on the +12Volt rail. However, realistically though and as a precaution, your looking at around 13 amps for the rest of the components that draw their power from the +12Volt rail which is namely the processor and the hard drives. So, depending on the other hardware components your friends system consists off, providing it isn't a heavily overclocked Quad Core with half of dozen hard drives :p, I would personally say that his Antec power supply unit would be absolutely fine powering an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro graphics card.

If you don't mind me asking, what other hardware components is your friend running? :)

I'm not absolutely positive, and it being 2 in the morning he is in bed, but it is a fairly old Emachines PC whose PSU and GPU he has upgraded to the Antec and a 6600GS. It runs a P4 at 3.0Ghz (not sure what core), some sort of generic mobo, 1GB DDR RAM, 1 HDD and a couple of DVD RW drives...nothing too hefty. I figure that it ought to be OK, just don't want him to blow my card!

i doubt he will blow your card with lack of power. normally if there is lack of power you get randon crashes or just not starting. or in extreme cases i guess psu could go but random crashes is more likely

i ran an x1950pro, 4200x2 2.2ghz, 2gb ddr2 ram, 1 hdd and 1 dvd drive on a generic 400w power supply with 22amps on the 12 volt rail. it ran ok, but while playing games sometimes the screen flickered or lines came down the screen (only noticable in dark areas for some reason). i put that down to power lack. it ran ok for 2 months until i got an ocz stealth extreme 600w PSU and then the flickering and lines stopped.
your friends 400w psu should probably run it.
